      Critics Consensus

Ideal Home benefits from the chemistry between a well-chosen cast, whose work helps tip the scales against the script's inconsistent -- and occasionally retrograde -- humor.

Daniel O Good move to watch more of once Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/21/23 Full Review PridePosterStudios I had to Taco some time to think about this but I Bellieve there was a lot of product endorsement in this. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review Gareth v While the lead characters are terribly cliched, the movie gets by on it's heartwarming and socially aware story. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/22/23 Full Review Richard S Charming and, in places, laugh out loud funny. I don't tend to like Paul Rudd, but he's excellent in this. He elevates it from stupid sitcom to something much more engaging. The toxic chemistry with Coogan is great fun. The film's jokes rely heavily on ‘gay is weird and funny', which jars a little give the straight cast, but it's clearly well intentioned. The main strike against it is the rushed ending. Presumably there was pressure to hit the magic 90 minutes, and the result is an unsatisfactory sprint from the peril of the courtroom to the closing credits, which doesn't pause to wrap up the subplots. But overall, it's a lot of fun. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/23 Full Review Aye E I find this movie so satisfying to watch. It's one of my go-to rewatch favorites. I think it's because the characters and situations feel so real and in some cases very personally relatable, even as a cis het middle aged white woman. The performances are just perfection. I also have a mid-30s guy friend that I discovered loves this movie as well, we both have it on DVD. It's a great option for Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd fans (and Jesk fans aka Jake McDorman). The only downside to me is the marketing and art, I can't stand it. The "These Dads Suck" looks like it's the movie title which is confusing on it's own. But worse, it makes it seem like some dude comedy like American Pie or The Hangover, and it's not that vibe at all. Sharp-witted dark humor is not the same as being "edgy". It really does the movie a disservice and I think has skewed audience expectations and probably contributed to it getting lower ratings. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review isla s I really enjoyed this film - ok its corny/cheesy but its a bit of silly fun. The pompous-ness of Erasmus I found amusing and I thought Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd gave good performances. There's nothing complicated about this film - its an easy, entertaining watch, although it does feature sex references and some strong language and its about a gay couple, so its not suitable for youngsters but I enjoyed it. I get the feeling that both of the main leads, Coogan and Rudd, didn't take their characters especially seriously and I found myself laughing alongside them - laughing with them, not necessarily at them, which is a good thing. Its hardly entirely original or amazing but its certainly worth a watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Claudia Puig FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) This is a slight film, but it is a low-key delight. Dec 14, 2019 Full Review Simran Hans Observer (UK) Every joke's punchline is that these characters are gay, making it difficult to understand who exactly, in 2018, the film hopes to make laugh. Rated: 2/5 Jul 8, 2018 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) Maybe it's all a meta joke? Or an ironic bad-taste prank? Let's hope so. Rated: 1/5 Jul 6, 2018 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Several lines and moments remain memorable and laugh-out-loud funny, regardless of its transparent ambitions as a socially progressive comedy. Rated: 3/4 Mar 11, 2022 Full Review Ben Turner The Pink Lens At times some of the gags can be a little obvious, but on the whole this has a tight comedic script that plays on both character and situation for plenty of laughs.
