Emanuel Levy Variety There's little art and not much entertainment either in HBO's earnestly didactic anthology of how a series of different women deal with their unexpected pregnancies. Debra B Wow, just finished this movie. Really well done while presenting the dilemmas and complexities women face when dealing with an unwanted pregnancy. Recommend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/05/23 Full Review Audience Member It's an "unplanned pregnancy" movie - but more an abortion movie where Demi, Sissy, and Anne play pregnant women that have different outcomes. Even in the 90s, the media slant towards abortion and morality was huge. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is an intimate look into why women's rights and reproductive healthcare choices are crucial for the state to truly remain free. It is heartwrenching, and yet so necessary to show the realities women face where their reproductive health is concerned. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member The times may keep changing but the emotions remain the same This aired on HBO television 25 years ago yet still holds so much weight now especially given the recent Texas law that was just passed A movie about one of the biggest hot-button topics of human history 3 women experience their own journeys throughout three decades; Demi Moore, Sissy Spacek, and Cher Moore is a nurse, Claire Donnelly living in a part of the United States in 1952 where getting an abortion is illegal But she feels that she has to do this to spare hurting her late husband's family, it also doesn't help that the father of Claire's baby is her brother-in-law In 1974 Spacek is a middle-aged mother, Barbara Barrows with a husband and two other kids but didn't expect to have another at her age while also going back to school Her oldest daughter wants to go to school but Barbara needs to make this decision for all her kids Lastly in 1996 Cher as Dr. Beth Thomas helps Anne Heche as Christine Cullen Christine's professor whom is married gets her pregnant too He offers her money to take care of "the problem" but it's in the midst of a violent protest advocating anti-abortion Christine is on her own handling the situation yet her roommate is insisting she doesn't go through with it Rioters, picketing, and demonstrations ensue The rest of the supporting cast is led by some big names from Anne Heche to Jada-Pinkett Smith to CCH Pounder to Catherine Keener to Craig T. Nelson to Rita Wilson Each of these women's experiences in each vignette are designed to demonstrate the popular views of society on the issue in each of the given decade Some women are ready or just aren't, is it a cardinal sin to terminate a pregnancy regardless of how far it is, not everybody is the same going through with the procedure as they can feel relief or depression, how many mothers actually love their kids despite not wanting them in the first place, how much physical and verbal abuse exists because the women feel cheated out of life or robbed of opportunities they never had? Even Gloria Steinham said at one point if men could get pregnant abortion would be a sacrament Abortion has long been one of the most heated debates among women, mothers, feminists, religious groups, and women's rights activists These women face their own tough choices to make but there will always be opposing sides for everybody plus the extremes people go to violent etc. 3 very talented actresses in a hard-hitting movie of touchy subject matter Overly earnest but admirable in saying what it's trying to convey Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Kinda campy but still good enough to make one super emotional. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review hayley b lots of "time jumps" in this ffilm, I watch it without knowing it skips to seperate storys and at first I was confused but after a while understood the familys do not connect but their stories do. I felt invested in some stories and didn't want them to skip to the next but the film overall was good, it focuses on a touchy subject explaining personal issue and growth with such a hard decision for women to make. also the movie has cher so.. im biased, she is amazing.
