From Blumhouse, the genre-defining masterminds behind FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S and M3GAN, comes an original horror that taps into the innocence of imaginary friends -- and begs the question: Are they really figments of childhood imagination or is something more terrifying lying just beneath? When Jessica (DeWanda Wise) moves back into her childhood home with her family, her youngest stepdaughter Alice (Pyper Braun) develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement. Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful and become increasingly sinister. As Alice's behavior becomes more and more concerning, Jessica intervenes only to realize Chauncey is much more than the stuffed toy bear she believed him to be.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Imaginary's core concept is solid enough to produce a handful of scares, but too much of its potential is lost in a clichéd story that gets bogged down in world-building.

Audience Says

Imaginary passes the time painlessly and has some scary moments, but in the end, this is a pretty basic horror movie.

Look beyond the plethora of allusions, and you’ll see a film that’s happily engaging with the genre while still maintaining a solid core of real dread so that it’s not all empty calories. Go to Full Review

Not a total catastrophe, but perilously close to being one. Is it too obvious to say Imaginary is simply lacking in imagination? Go to Full Review

While a bit unwieldy, Imaginary is a playfully deranged movie that's sure to be a hit at slumber parties. But grown-ups can enjoy its spirited scares, too. Go to Full Review

It is a successful horror film that takes a well-known premise to offer us a deeper, entertaining story, full of tension and narrative twists, with a good cast to accompany it. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

For a film about imagination, the new BlumHouse horror mystery lacks any real ingenuity. While presenting a creative concept, the barely nightmarish dull thriller deserved a much better execution. Go to Full Review
