Lorenzo Santenocito (Vittorio Gassman) is a corrupt business entrepreneur in postwar Italy, bribing government officials and polluting the water supply with his various industries. Judge Mariano Bonifazi (Ugo Tognazzi) believes Santenocito is also responsible for the murder of an escort (Ely Galleani) and the subsequent cover-up. Santenocito is intent on proving his innocence, and the ensuing investigation suggests Bonifazi himself is more involved than anyone suspected.

Audience Member I loved it, and it's so actual it could scare me. (Not the final bit, actually, but still.) Tognazzi and Gassman were two great actors and Risi an impressive director. Benchè trovi le prove della sua innocenza, lo rinvierà comunque a giudizio, ossessionato da ciò che rappresenta e incurante della realtà dei fatti. Cinema con la C maiuscola, attualissimo, ci ricorda quanto spesso la magistratura tenda ad uscire dalla propria funzione di controllo e assuma un atteggiamento attivo, manipolando le indagini arbitrariamente. La figura del giudice istruttore fu soppressa nel 1989, per evitare pregiudizi in fase di indagine. Tognazzi sommesso e pacato, Gassman mattatore.
