Minute for minute, you won't find a more romantic gay film this year than British rugby drama IN FROM THE SIDE, a surprisingly moving sports-team story slathered in sweat, streaked with mud, and dripping with sensuality. As a "B Squad" of gay athletes tries to overcome inexperience and push past rivalries to score an elusive win, a secret affair simmers among them. Mark (puppy-eyed Alexander Lincoln) finds himself unable to avoid the blazing appeal of teammate Warren (Alexander King), with his cocky attitude and emotional unavailability.

Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times An especially well-filmed, acted and mounted effort. Jan 20, 2023 Full Review Kyle Turner New York Times “In From the Side” feels too much like two separate movies smashed together like two players from opposing teams, making its 2-hour-and-14-minute run time a slog. Jan 19, 2023 Full Review Dan Callahan TheWrap So padded out at 134 minutes with both rugby games and sex scenes that the final effect is numbing, and writer-director Matt Carter doesn’t bother much with either plot or character to fill out his narrative. Jan 17, 2023 Full Review Sarah Boslaugh TheArtsStl In from the Side looks great, the rugby action is convincing ... and there are certainly a lot of handsome men featured in various states of dress and undress (if you like bearded guys, that goes double). Rated: 6/10 May 8, 2023 Full Review Danny Brogan Common Sense Media While the film is beautifully shot, some of the acting is wooden, and there are a handful of scenes that feel unsubtle or just plain cheesy. Rated: 3/5 Jan 18, 2023 Full Review Avi Offer NYC Movie Guru Dull, overlong and vapid despite solid performances. Jan 18, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Hoover C Not sure how this film made it to be released anywhere, with a badly written script, and skin-deep character portraiture. With the subject of a gay rugby story, it could have the potential to be great if the film could focus on the sport and competition to bring out the romance. Instead, it focuses on the mellow drama of two guys cheating on their partners. If that's the route, at least give more stories to their spouses, and provide a more three-dimensional portrayal of the main characters. In the 2 plus more hours, the whole film just focuses on their repeating cheating, getting together, and nothing else. The whole plot and the action of the characters keep contradicting each other. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Rodney S Gay rugby players in love. Yes the story is tried and true but it's still fun to watch. Steamy scenes were great. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Charlie S Enjoyed every minute. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review HENRY B I really Enjoyed this film.. It moves at a pace allowing the viewer to get Invested in the characters and grow Empathetic for them. Also, Smart Writing where two people are at Fault instead of the usual “Villain/Home-wrecker” role by One Person. The action sequences are done well and the guys really give it their all when playing rugby - the Sexuality becomes a Non-Issue. Beautiful Locations and Apartment to see the Success of the characters lives. Oh and the Guys are Gorgeous & very Masculine which was Refreshing to see! Great Acting all around! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Lu B A wonderful plunge into the messiness of human nature. The narrative parallel between the stories of Mark and his mother are a stand-out, as well as the acting of Alexander Lincoln. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review Michael K I really loved the movie. No mention of homophobia - fantastic! No mention of dying, or HIV, or coming out - refreshing! The characters were all realistic and true. Really well written, really well acted from all, especially the two Alex leads. Definitely worth paying to rent.
