During a visit to Warsaw, antiques dealer Jennifer Whittredge (Ida Lupino) meets Polish Count Stephan Orvid (Paul Henreid). They quickly fall in love and, when he proposes marriage, Jennifer pays a visit to the count's very traditional family. The aristocrats don't approve of the the pair's relationship, but Jennifer's cheerful spirit and can-do attitude are infectious. When Nazi forces arrive in Poland, the family bands together, and all class distinctions are quickly cast aside.
