John von Rhein Chicago Tribune The result is an absorbing and illuminating portrait of a composer whose popularity actually exceeded that of Wolfgang and Ludwig during his day. Rated: 4/4 Apr 12, 2012 Full Review Evan Williams The Australian In Search of Haydn is the third in Phil Grabsky's fine trilogy of films about great classical composers, a worthy successor to In Search of Mozart and the somewhat less successful In Search of Beethoven. Mar 23, 2012 Full Review London Evening Standard This is a film that sweeps away preconceptions with a very thorough broom. Rated: 3/5 Mar 15, 2012 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg Time Out Chicago You don't need to be interested in classical music to find the results engrossing. Rated: 3/5 Apr 12, 2012 Full Review Rip It Up Classical music groupies will rejoice over Grabsky's seemingly-final entry in this documentary series -- but is it indeed the last word? Who else could he possibly construct a film around? Vivaldi? Bach? Debussy? Prokofiev? Mar 23, 2012 Full Review Julian Wood FILMINK (Australia) Perhaps more suited to television, the film nevertheless will please classical music fans and Haydn is certainly owed a renewed assessment and a current audience. Audience Member Joseph Haydn found stable and lucrative employment with a wealthy prince which gave him (and his wife, i suppose) 30+ years of security while allowing his music to develop and flourish - quite a severe comparison to the contemporary greats Mozart and Beethoven. The movie depicts Haydn's relative isolation from musicians from nearby large cities with the inferred freedom to discover his God-given creative genius. In Search of Mozart, In Search of Beethoven are must-sees after this enlightening 1 hour 48 minutes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Read all reviews
