What to Know

      Critics Consensus

In Search of Mozart may not be quite as exhilarating as its subject's classic compositions, but it offers an enlightening, entertaining primer on the life of a brilliant artist.

Audience Member Mozart movie, excellent storytelling of a giant talent. Sad that Mozart struggled with finances so long. Hurray for his father, then his supportive wife. RECOMMEND and as well Searching for Beethoven, Searching for Haydn. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Chris Loved the performances and photography Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/10/19 Full Review mike v This casual and straight-forward documentary was released to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth. It contains numerous interviews and provides a chronological analysis of Mozart's life events, travels, letters, and of course his music. Here we get to see the man behind the music. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member

In Search of Mozart
Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Well done documentary that told the story of Mozart's life through his music and correspondence. Beautifully done! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Everything composed by Mozart is worth hearing; and everything about him is worth reading and watching. Unfortunately, the film-maker is burdened by an agenda, as he seeks to demystify the man (as the final frames before the credits clearly demonstrate). Mozart's Masonic connections are reduced to a mere footnote... and we're supposed to believe that Mozart simply composed for market. For interviews, I'd rather hear what NON musicians have to say about his music. For images, I'd rather see what these places looked like in Mozart's time (through the magic of CGI). Any film about Mozart should automatically rate a solid 9 (at least), but this one lost marks because of the fertile territory it left unexplored. J. R. Jones Chicago Reader This thorough and insightful 2006 documentary presents a more rounded and compelling view of the high-spirited genius. Sep 28, 2007 Full Review Moira MacDonald Seattle Times The film effectively usurps the images left by Milos Forman's artful yet not entirely factually accurate Amadeus. Rated: 3/4 Sep 28, 2007 Full Review Frank Scheck Hollywood Reporter More rewarding musically than cinematically. Aug 4, 2007 Full Review Robert W. Butler Kansas City Star Perhaps the neatest thing about Phil Grabsky's In Search of Mozart is that after watching it for more than two hours your first impulse is to rush to the Internet and download a slew of Mozart recordings.
