Audience Member The best about this charming and deceptively simple film is how it gives new contours and nuances to its characters (made all the more real by the excellent performances) as the story progresses, but it is just a pity that it ends with such an easy and rather frustrating resolution. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member An anti-romantic French film with an absorbing aesthetic that unfortunately gives into too many art house film cliches. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member The spare 73-minute French drama In the Shadow of Women, features Manon (Clotilde Courau) and Pierre (Stanislas Merhar), a husband and wife team of documentary filmmakers. The fact it's shot in black and white enables us to focus on the essence of each scene. It's also a signal we're in film noir, morally ambiguous territory. And indeed we are. Despite their devotion to each other, and no doubt feeling their marriage is strong enough to weather any marital storm, each succumbs to infidelity. For one the motivation is lust and for the other, the need to be loved. (No prizes for guessing who is what.) The theme of deception also runs through the subplot, the subject of their current documentary, a former Resistance member who claims ignorance of the Vichy government's maltreatment of Jews. Director Philippe Garrel's final scene is a classic denouement, the film's most moving moment. Ty Burr Boston Globe Garrel's gaze is cool and steady, and he's not interested in villains. He knows this is an old story and an eternal one, and that men and women are helpless to avoid repeating it. Rated: 3/4 Mar 10, 2016 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Garrel uses a panoramic frame to stress the characters' closeness (or lack thereof), and the players waltz through his simple, neatly structured script. Feb 11, 2016 Full Review Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle "In the Shadow of Women" will appeal to a passionate, but limited, audience. I happen to be in that audience ... Rated: 3/4 Feb 4, 2016 Full Review Steve Erickson Gay City News In the end, "In the Shadow Of Women" is a film about betrayal, and its final scenes suggest how that betrayal has consequences in the political realm beyond one marriage. Feb 15, 2018 Full Review Richard Porton Cinema Scope In a casual, supremely non-didactic fashion, Garrel skewers male hubris. Oct 2, 2017 Full Review Dorothy Woodend The Tyee (British Columbia) Philippe Garrel's film In the Shadow of Women felt as fresh and newly minted as a summer day in Paris.
