Critics Consensus

A potentially intriguing premise is rapidly lost in the weeds during In the Tall Grass which struggles to stretch its slim source material to feature length.

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald Netflix seems to be banging out Steven King adaptations as fast as King used to bang out books. This one, based on a novella by King and his son Joe Hill, is quite a decent little creeper too. Oct 30, 2019 Full Review Monica Castillo Polygon While it's not the sharpest of King's stories, Natali's cast redeems the film's shortcomings. Oct 7, 2019 Full Review Marjorie Baumgarten Austin Chronicle The performances are all solid, and writer/director [Vincenzo] Natali and cinematographer Craig Wrobleski wreaking fiendish menace from the grass jungle. Surely, they're not in Kansas anymore. Oct 4, 2019 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies There is only so much you can do with such a small amount of source material, and in compensating for that “In the Tall Grass” repeats itself too much. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 22, 2022 Full Review Graeme Tuckett Stuff.co.nz Tthis is hands-down one of silliest and funniest - unintentionally - alleged horrors I've seen in years. Hudson F If you're looking for something scary... I don't know if this is what you want. It's unsettling, and most of the movie, you're just looking at grass. So, that should tell you the budget. Acting wasn't bad, and the entirety of the plot was a bit eerie, but the ending was a little disappointing, and it felt like a lack of effort to be scary. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Lillian C If you like grass this is the movie for you. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/24 Full Review christina b This is a time loop movie. I can get any many may not like it and that’s fine. I personally really enjoyed it. Like the vast majority of time travel/time loop storylines, it is nearly impossible to not have some plot holes or seem like parts don’t make sense. But that’s fine with me. What I really enjoyed was 1) the novelty of the plot 2) the supernatural elements 3) the multiple timelines due to the loop 4) the atmosphere and setting in the maze grass which to me was like a bad acid trip/fever dream iykyk which to me personally causes both dread anxiety and an odd pleasure of being trapped into a surrealistic place/scenario yet trying to make sense of the impossible. So yea it’s a matter of taste like most films. I thoroughly enjoy this surrealistic trippy atmosphere so if anyone else does too you’ll like this film. Probably not appealing to a wide audience hence the lower ratings and I get their reasons why but for me it scratches an itch so I loved it!!! If you like the stuff I described give it a shot otherwise maybe not for you or will leave you frustrated with the loop storyline and overlapping timelines :)) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Audience Member This movie is definitely not everyone's cup of tea. From the gory scenes to the cult like aspect of the film, this movie may cause certain viewers to feel queasy. However, if you can get past all of this you can get to understand the religious like connotations and realise how belief can be a double edged sword. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/30/24 Full Review Nancie M Why do I recommend it? I'm used to movies that I can predict the next scene to some point I can even predict what a character will say and which situation will follow before I'm even halfway the movie. But this one, I couldn't figure out the meaning, the main message, why the plot is that way, it kept my mind active and interested "why haven't I figured it out yet". So yeah, I wasn't bored... my mind was active I saw every scene and still couldn't figure out why in many incidents Maybe not everything is meant to make sense, and sometimes, it is okay to accept things like they are. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/14/24 Full Review Kellan E Terrible movie, after the first 30 mins it’s the exact same thing just repeating itself it got boring very quickly.
