Stephen Romei The Australian This is not an animated movie for young children. There will be loads of those in the next few weeks as the school holidays kick in. But In This Corner of the World is remarkable. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 15, 2017 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald It has jaw-droppingly gorgeous settings, in which all the buildings are depicted with full accuracy, as are the homes of the peasant families who live on a mountain slope, overlooking the (largely wooden) city. Rated: 4/5 Dec 8, 2017 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com Perfectly animated, emotionally pure, In This Corner of the World is an outright marvel. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 22, 2017 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand ... for all the loveliness of the imagery and the tenderness of the drama, director Sunao Katabuchi never denies the loss and destruction of the war. Apr 6, 2024 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens Thoughtful and creative in the telling of this chapter of world history from a unique perspective, In This Corner of the World is a film for the whole family. Oct 30, 2019 Full Review Gabriel Ricard Cultured Vultures In This Corner of the World uses its World War II story and spellbinding protagonist Suzu to create a powerful depiction of war beyond the high-stakes dramatics of the battlefield. Cody Z This anime wasn't the most beautiful, or most breathtaking like a lot of anime tries to be these days. What made this anime stand out was the way it showed a side of the war that many people (on the opposite side) don't get to see. We always imagine the people who were against us as heathens and monsters, but they were just people. Just like us. The people went about their lives as normally as they could. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/27/23 Full Review Spencer P With its uniquely simple style and lovely, yet tragic story in the backdrop of WWII Japan, In This Corner of the World is another recommendable anime gem. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/11/23 Full Review Cameron L Beautiful water color animation with powerful drama about WW2 in that perspective Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Mijające życie, śmierć jako jego zwyczajna część i bezradność - pokazane w zaskakująco autentyczny sposób. Nawet wzruszający Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Michael M In This Corner of the World is a moving, beautifully animated production with a rare perspective on the Pacific War. I appreciate seeing the other side of a story I've usually seen from an American perspective - while Japan may have been the aggressor, people need a reminder that a country's ordinary citizens are not solely defined by their government's misdeeds. While the war is a major part of the story, the film is at heart a insightful study of its main character, a sweet, absent-minded young woman named Suzu, and how she copes with the war, with its supply shortages and aerial bombardments. This makes for heavy subject matter, but In This Corner of the World balances this with moments of humor and levity, reminding us that even in war, life goes on. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/20/21 Full Review david l In This Corner of the World is an anime WWII drama that is at its best in the animation department. The watercolor hand-drawn style felt suitably melancholic given the subject matter and a lot of the imagery is quite artistic. The characterization is also solid. However, the long runtime, slow pace and an oddly emotionally distant tone prevented me from engaging with the film more. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
