It has jaw-droppingly gorgeous settings, in which all the buildings are depicted with full accuracy, as are the homes of the peasant families who live on a mountain slope, overlooking the (largely wooden) city.

This is a masterpiece. A really sad story that shows the struggle of a young girl from her childhood to her married life. Shows the horrors of the world war II of Japan. People becoming monsters and killing people. And this is just the story of a single country from few years. So many incidents and genocides have taken place throughout the history. This is a movie that is hard to sell. It is both incredibly sweet while at the same time being heartbreakingly devastating. There is very little action, the movie focuses on all the little things, Suzu preparing meals, shopping, drawing and sewing. It's a slice of life story with the most slices I've ever seen. The animation is some of the most beautiful I've seen. It capitalizes on the animation in a manner that this film would not work nearly as well if it was live action. Suzu herself is a great artist, thus we the audience get to see what great art can do. Gather from all corners of the world and watch this film.

This anime wasn't the most beautiful, or most breathtaking like a lot of anime tries to be these days. What made this anime stand out was the way it showed a side of the war that many people (on the opposite side) don't get to see. We always imagine the people who were against us as heathens and monsters, but they were just people. Just like us. The people went about their lives as normally as they could.
