Critics Consensus

Incident in a Ghost Land may satisfy horror fans in search of a nasty kick, but it's narratively flawed and decidedly not for the squeamish.

Simon Abrams Village Voice An effectively punishing critique of the relentless misogyny that has become a staple of every stupid Texas Chain Saw Massacre knockoff that pits sexually active women against emotionally disturbed serial killers. Jun 22, 2018 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety Laugnier meticulously showcases sadism while seeming comparatively indifferent to matters of basic storytelling logic and suspense. Jun 22, 2018 Full Review Kimber Myers Los Angeles Times Transphobia and misogyny flow through the film as much as blood, staining what might have been a solid genre effort. Jun 21, 2018 Full Review Paul Farrell Vague Visages ...it is not the gross-out factor that turns me off from Laugier’s second attempt at martyrdom, it is the casual virulence towards his characters... Dec 13, 2023 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast Laugier makes many questionable choices regarding the film's villains, but those issues aside he has still managed to craft a bleak, visceral and deeply upsetting horror film. Rated: 3.5/5 May 31, 2022 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast While Laugier delivers a fantastically tense home invasion thriller, the politics - from the misogyny, to the transphobic villain, to the reverence for H.P. Lovecraft - make his creative decisions virtually unforgivable. Rated: 3.5/5 May 28, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Daniel C cine de terror como nunc antes se ah visto no solo un relato de terror tambien psicologico y de superacion, gran escenografia, escenas de accion y suspenso como nunca ES CINE. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/25 Full Review Zy S One of the best movies I've watched in a while. It touches a lot of sensitive topics, including kidnapping, sexual abuse, molestation, trauma, coping with trauma, psychological aspects, etc. So for that reason I wouldn't recommend this movie to the particularly sensitive. The way the movie was made I think appeals to both the normal person and the sadist who roots for the villains. I really enjoyed the visual appeals of both the actresses in this film and how both were made to be dolls. I would have liked to have gotten more backstory of how the two villains of the story were related to one another. I think Beth's role of being a writer was a little too overdeveloped in this movie. This film really wanted you to know this and spent way too much screen time about this almost irrelevant topic. One thing this movie could have done better was really help the audience determine the real from the Beth's imaginary storyline. I was almost halfway into the movie until I knew for certain which plot was the real plot. And it really didn't help that the Beth's mother tells her not to listen to Vera early in the film. Because now that sets me up to assume that she's crazy and gets Beth caught up in her delusion, a folie à deux phenomenon. And that's what I think the director wanted to do here, to induce a plot twist, but it didn't have the effect of a plot twist, and just makes the audience lose a solid 20 minutes until they finally accept the real timeline. Maybe some viewers appreciate this experience, but I don't. Don't try to force a plot twist for me by simply telling me not to follow along with the storyline. In general I think it's bad screenwriting to give audience forewarnings that they should ignore. Good writing is giving them forewarnings they should abide to, and then try to knock the audience off board by throwing stuff at them to abandon said forewarnings but ultimately lead to should have listened. The ending was a little surreal because generally cops have body armor, and I don't see how one female can overpower 2 that easily. But not that unrealistic, so just a tiny bit of diabolus ex machina that occurred there. But overall, great film. Minor criticism and small adjustments could have made this a 5/5. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/03/25 Full Review Ishara L I have trouble with this one. First of all, I really enjoyed the concept, the main girl thinks she's safe and sound, but it's her sister that has been driven mad by the random attack by crazy killers. Only for it to be turned on its head when it's revealed as a fantasy to escape her terrible situation. Which is great, that's an amazing idea, but the execution has to be there. If I keep wondering what the hell is happening, but I don't get to guess what is real and what's not it feels redundant. It's played completely straight and then I'm suddenly pulled out of the dream I got whiplash. It also has a redeeming escape sequence that is actually creepy and nail biting. Besides that, not a lot going for it. Dialogue, acting: bad. Cinematography: very ugly colours at certain points. Set-desing and props: decent. Meh. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Paul S This was a most intense movie, and didn't play out like you expected. The acting and emotions of the two sisters was absolutely incredible. They have given Oscars for acting that is much less amazing as their performances were. There are many questions to the film, such as was it all real or just part of the book the girl had written, played out this way. It was a true cut above the typical horror films, with pulse-pounding action and so much more. It truly was one of the better horror films out there, and at least there was a positive resolution to the movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review Farah R Another tedious torture porn masked as a decent horror movie—a complete waste of time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/06/24 Full Review Ely R Entertaining movie for any horror fan with a good plot-twist Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
