Joe Williams St. Louis Post-Dispatch There are so many levels of nostalgia piled onto Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull that it’s hard to unearth a nugget of new inspiration; but the golden oldies that are doled out should dazzle those who cheer for the familiar. Rated: B Apr 13, 2023 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald It is like seeing a dear old friend. Indiana once made us all feel we could be stronger and braver, if we tried. And he wasn't a silly modern superhero, just a guy who combined a thirst for knowledge with great courage and ingenuity. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 12, 2023 Full Review Sukhdev Sandhu Daily Telegraph (UK) Ford himself is absolutely fine. Apr 12, 2023 Full Review Joseph Tomastik Loud and Clear Reviews Despite the film’s many poor choices that range from mildly distracting to hugely damaging, I found plenty to like in Crystal Skull, and I don’t think it completely goes against the spirit of the Indiana Jones movies Rated: 3/5 Nov 21, 2024 Full Review Andrew Collins Radio Times Though exhausting and relentless, it's hard to dislike, thanks to Ford's weary charm, his leather-jacketed new wingman Shia LaBeouf, and an emphasis on pleasingly "old school" stuntwork. Rated: 4/5 Apr 12, 2024 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy I will never understand the hatred for the refrigerator scene — it’s a marvelous set-piece and very much in the spirit of the whole franchise. You want a low point? How about Shia LaBeouf’s Mutt swinging through the trees alongside a bunch of CGI monkeys? Rated: 3/4 Jul 7, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Christian Ryan N Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) While the Indiana Jones franchise has always been known for sticking to the plausible—blending historical references with adventure in a way that immerses you in its time period—Kingdom of the Crystal Skull falters in its attempt to recapture that magic. For die-hard Indy fans, it’s a must-watch, but if you’re not already invested in the series, you're not missing much. Unless, of course, you just like watching a lot of movies. One of the biggest problems with this film is the over-reliance on CGI, which undermines the authenticity that made the earlier films so engaging. The Indiana Jones movies have always had a way of making you forget you’re watching a set or a soundstage—this film, however, doesn’t quite manage that. The CGI feels out of place, drawing you out of the action, making it harder to feel immersed in the world. The action scenes, though exciting, suffer because of it, taking away from the realism that the previous films did so well to maintain. Unfortunately, this CGI-heavy approach also detracts from the tone and style that made Indiana Jones so special. While Spielberg’s direction is still apparent in some moments, the overuse of digital effects weakens the grounded, adventurous feeling the franchise is known for. As for the story, it tries to dive into history, but it feels like something’s missing—especially when it comes to the more fantastical elements, like the flying saucer at the end. There’s an attempt to create something thrilling, but it comes across as implausible rather than adventurous. It’s a shame, because the legends surrounding the real crystal skulls have so much cinematic potential. Instead, the film leans into a sci-fi narrative that just doesn’t fit with the historical and mystical roots of the series. This shift to alien beings feels like a dramatic departure, and while the 1950s Cold War setting could have been a cool backdrop, it doesn’t mesh well with the supernatural elements we’re used to. This film also faces challenges with its character development. While Crystal Skull attempts to introduce new dynamics, particularly with Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf), it doesn’t flesh them out enough. Mutt’s “greaser” persona feels more like a caricature than a fully realized character, and his relationship with Indy—while central to the story—feels rushed and underdeveloped. Likewise, the return of Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) is a welcome surprise, but her character doesn’t receive the depth we might expect, especially when compared to her role in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The real problem lies in the way the film tries to balance the introduction of a family dynamic with Indy’s aging process. Indy being portrayed as a family man compromises the adventurous spirit we loved about him in the previous films. The film never fully commits to either direction, leaving us with a storyline that feels like a half-baked attempt to both honor Indy’s past and push him into a new role. The opening was a strong start, with a focus on timely events and great shots. The warehouse scene, though, was over-processed to the point where it felt fake, and that set the tone for much of what followed. There's a decent balance between the characters, but overall, the performances are hit or miss. Harrison Ford, of course, is solid as Indy, but Shia LaBeouf’s portrayal of Mutt Williams is a bit over-the-top with his "greaser" act. It’s as if the film is trying too hard to establish Mutt as the new face of the franchise, but it doesn’t have the same ease or chemistry that the original trio had. Another issue that hurts the movie is the soundtrack. John Williams’ iconic score, which is usually integral to the Indiana Jones experience, doesn’t elevate the action as it has in the past. The music, while still fitting for certain scenes, lacks the emotional punch of earlier entries. It feels like a by-the-numbers soundtrack, rather than something that truly drives the adventure forward. In the end, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull isn’t a memorable addition to the Indiana Jones legacy. It had potential, especially with the mythos surrounding the crystal skull, but ultimately, it’s a film that feels less like a thrilling adventure and more like a missed opportunity. The reliance on CGI, the weak character development, and the decision to introduce a sci-fi element that doesn’t fit the series all hold it back. While it may have appealed to die-hard fans, Crystal Skull fails to capture the magic of the original trilogy, leaving a film that, unfortunately, doesn’t live up to its storied legacy.
