paul d This police mystery builds slowly to its climax, and the payoff is worth waiting for even if the guilty party was given away earlier in the film, because Simenon has ways to keep us second-guessing what we see and hear. Jean Gabin is great, as usual, as Maigret, and the supporting cast is excellent. Noteworthy are the performances from Jean Desailly playing a complex and schizophrenic character, and Annie Girardot as his equally complex but introverted wife. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Jean Gabin gives a fine performance in the title role, but the film itself is overlong and talky.
