Chris Cabin Slant Magazine An irrefutably pleasant and yet terminally half-hearted comedy. Rated: 1.5/4 Feb 29, 2012 Full Review Hannah Brown Jerusalem Post While there is some tentativeness about Man without a Cell Phone, Zoabi is clearly a director worth watching. Audience Member A young man who just wants to live his life and go to school and find a girlfriend finds himself regularly stymied by politics and prejudice and customs - none of which he cares about. Meanwhile his father rallies support for protesting a cell phone tower that most of the protesters rely on for cell reception. A mostly lighthearted look at some very deep problems. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Even with some anti-Israeli sentiments, MAN WITHOUT A CELL PHONE is a slight, gentle comedy produced in Israel [and, in fact, a Palestine-Israel-France-Belgium co-production] that tells the story of Salem, a traditionalist Arab-Israeli olive farmer who's full of resentment towards the country he feels occupies him and his land, and Jadwat, his modern thinking son who's accepted his status and is hoping for a fully integrated future by applying to a Hebrew University. They unwittingly join forces when an [oppressive] cell phone antenna is placed in their olive field inciting a community rebellion. The comical juxtaposition of this absurdity [that they cannot live without their cell phones but don't want the antenna on their land] is the film's most political point which drives MAN WITHOUT A CELL PHONE and solidifies its social statment.
