In den 192 Minuten von POURQUOI ISRAEL breitet Lanzmann ein intensives Porträt der entstehenden jüdischen Nation aus, leitet die Utopie und den Nationalmythos Israels (sowie dessen dunkle Seiten) historisch ab und beleuchtet gleichzeitig die sozialen und nationalideologischen Probleme des jungen Landes. Aus dem bewusst ambivalent gehaltenen Titel wird somit gleichzeitig ein entschiedenes "Darum Israel" wie ein anklagendes "Warum, Israel?"
