In crowded post-war Rome, beauty Renata Adorni (Linda Darnell) and shrewd Carlo Reani (Vittorio De Sica) both want the same apartment. Unable to come to any other resolution, the pair marry in order to share it, but Renata insists that Carlo allow her to continue dating. Carlo agrees but is critical of all the men Renata sees, until she becomes involved with Dino (Rossano Brazzi), who pursues her relentlessly. When Carlo ceases intervening in her love life, Renata realizes who she really loves.
