Wolcott Gibbs New Yorker It's in the Bag is one of those pictures in which a number of reasonably celebrated comedians flicker in and out, doing their best to assist the star in what is best described as a plot of convenience. Oct 15, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Steve D Hopefully it is a trash bag. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/18/24 Full Review Audience Member Even though it was his first starring vehicle, Fred Allen was reported to be unhappy with the final result. It's not hard to see why. Despite its A-list cast of supporting players (William Bendix, Don Ameche, Robert Benchley, John Carradine, Jack Benny, Victor Moore, Jerry Colonna, Rudy Vallee), the script is so lame that after this movie Fred Allen decided to concentrate on radio, where he enjoyed unparalleled popularity. A wise decision. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member A movie people go if want see favorite radio stars. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member The best comedy movie ever made! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member first version (the second 1970 mel brooks version) of this russian tale Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member OK. This isn't a 5 star movie - some of the acting is just plain poor, including Fred Allen's rather inept comic takes - but the script is brilliant, and the times when both come together (the movie theatre sequence springs to mind as a STONE classic) it is pure gold. It is worth watching for the odd character turns by Sidney Toler, Don Ameche, Jack Benny, Jerry Colonna, etc. and also for the lines that you just know Fred Allen wrote. My favorite - "Have you an iron lung in this establishment?" "No" " A FINE hotel!!!!" Just blip over the poor acting moments, and savor a rare comic talent at work.
