Critics Consensus

A needless remake that quickly loses sight of the themes that elevated the original, this is a Jacob's Ladder that leads straight to nowhere.

Meagan Navarro Bloody Disgusting This reimagining is more focused on paranoia and the relationship between Jacob and Isaac than it is creating a terrifying metaphor for PTSD, and the horror element is largely forgotten. It doesn't really offer any depth beyond that, either. Rated: 2/5 Aug 23, 2019 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com Only the commitment from the always-solid Michael Ealy saves it from being one of the worst movies of the year. Rated: 1/4 Aug 23, 2019 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Variety The new "Jacob's Ladder" plays like a half-hearted sketch of the movie it could have been. Aug 23, 2019 Full Review Rocco T. Thompson Rue Morgue Magazine a literal-minded and outward-looking reskinning of Lyne’s elliptical and introspective journey through hell that’s as pointless as it is dull. Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts This was disrespectful... not a film that can stand by itself. Rated: 3/10 Oct 27, 2020 Full Review Mark H. Harris Black Horror Movies While it's a competent production overall, Jacob's Ladder redux is ultimately pointless, just an inferior spin on the original that is the latest in a long line of unnecessary, ineffectual horror remakes. Ank C The movie had a lot of suspense, mystery and horror. And the actors gave standout performaces. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/27/19 Full Review Audience Member Hollywood needs to stop with these z grade remakes. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/28/24 Full Review Alex C Jacob's DEI Ladder. Unimaginably terrible in every way. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review isa e another pointless e boot, some movies are too iconic, this was a hot mess Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Have to agree with most reviews here - the original was one of my favourite films that I still remember vividly after watching it so many years ago - so I was intrigued to see what this remake would add to the classic. I loved the original ending and shocked by the conclusion to Jacob's journey - I was also shocked with the remake - shocked at how bad it was - shocked at taking the key component of the original storyline and changing it be a diminished, unoriginal, lame ending, shocked at the direction, the acting and the audacity to give it the same name as the original - terribly embarrassing to all involved. Just hope the original gets some more plays as a result of this to give those filmmakers some more credit - going to watch the 1990 version again just to get this 2019 abomination out of my system!
