Critics Consensus

An ostensible erotic thriller that's largely neither erotic nor thrilling, Jade marks one of several unfortunate low points for aggressively sexual mid-'90s cinema.

Eszterhas seems as bored with them as we are. He's just moving his dopey plot along, leaving Friedkin to fill in the gaps with car chases and irrelevant chinoiserie. Go to Full Review

Writer Joe Eszterhas's follow-up to his Showgirls fiasco is every bit as hopeless, and this time he takes some good actors down with him. Go to Full Review

…William Friedkin, Robert Evans and Joe Eszterhas had all seen this movie before, yet fancied making it one more time for the money, but with added class and trash. And classy trash is what Jade is...nothing outstays its welcome over a brisk 91 minutes... Go to Full Review

Both Friedkin and Eszterhas clearly found the subject matter of their own movie distasteful, which is a bit of a stumbling block when you’re trying to make an erotic thriller. Go to Full Review

Stephen C @bob25009 Jun 27 Success in 1 hour and 35 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The USA grossed over $9,200,000.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See more Ben D 01/23/2025 This one is rough. In The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Cal (Seth Rogan) advises Andy (Steve Carrell) that the key to seduction is “Pretend you’re David Caruso in Jade.” Ever since I heard that line almost 20 years ago, this movie has been at the back of my mind. I got none of that here. A contrived plot with all the usual suspects — corrupt politicians (Richard Crenna), slimy lawyers (Chazz Palminteri), and a detective playing by his own rules (David Caruso) — is filled with nonsensical car chase scenes and milquetoast “eroticism”. In Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F., the destructive car chase scene at least had a tinge of 1990s nostalgia to it, but here, it’s sincere and just stupid. Our good guy, ADA David Corelli (Caruso) causes more destructive chasing… someone than is even tangentially reasonable. This has to be one of my most loathed movie tropes. Jade fails because it is not thrilling (despite the intriguing beginning, a tone of which is abandoned thereafter) and is not erotic. In the end, I was left asking myself, “What did I just watch?”. Friedkin is a master, but not in this one. See more Victor P @vperez714 06/23/2024 The plot was contrived, arbitrary, and a disappointment from director William Friedkin and writer Joe Eszterhas who wrote Basic Instinct which was a better movie than Jade. See more Alice E 12/23/2023 it is very 90's but it is still good. I love its cinematography and score. See more John A @ExcessMale 04/30/2023 For the first half or so, Friedkin makes this very 90's crime procedural significantly better than a standard episode of Law and Order however the script ultimately forces the film to peter out in it's uninvolving resolution. Does have a great cast. See more Steve D 02/18/2023 Woeful at everything it tries to do. See more Read all reviews
