      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

An ostensible erotic thriller that's largely neither erotic nor thrilling, Jade marks one of several unfortunate low points for aggressively sexual mid-'90s cinema.

alvin a An ambitious San Francisco public defender becomes inveigled in the kinky murder of a local businessman. From the pen of Joe Eszterhaus, still chipping at the block of mental marble that gave us Basic Instinct and Showgirls. So there's some great purple dialogue - few can make a euphemism for genitalia land harder. What gets missed is Eszterhaus's fondness for heroes whose lack of self-awareness verges on stupidity and his sneaking regard for the femme fatale. Once governor Richard Crenna gets in the picture via some incriminating photos, there's also a heavy Clinton/Vince Foster vibe. Director William Friedkin zeroes in on this with an elephant gun, all the while thwarting any real "eroticism" in this erotic thriller via videotape snow and the dampening of animal passions by the Frisco fog. David Caruso is a ginger void, while Linda Fiorentino makes a four-course meal in her role as a thrill-seeking headshrinker. And because this is Friedkin, we get a car chase that only is pipped by Bullitt as the finest to ever be staged in the Bay Area. David Ansen Newsweek Eszterhas seems as bored with them as we are. He's just moving his dopey plot along, leaving Friedkin to fill in the gaps with car chases and irrelevant chinoiserie. Feb 23, 2018 Full Review Bruce Diones New Yorker Writer Joe Eszterhas's follow-up to his Showgirls fiasco is every bit as hopeless, and this time he takes some good actors down with him. Jun 12, 2013 Full Review Jay Boyar Orlando Sentinel Car-chase aficionados are advised not to miss out on Jade, but others can safely give it a pass. Rated: 2/5 Jun 12, 2013 Full Review Gena Radcliffe The Spool Both Friedkin and Eszterhas clearly found the subject matter of their own movie distasteful, which is a bit of a stumbling block when you’re trying to make an erotic thriller. Sep 28, 2023 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...an entertaining Caruso vehicle that fares better than its reputation might’ve suggested. Rated: 3/4 Aug 17, 2023 Full Review Margaret A. McGurk Cincinnati Enquirer On the surface. Jade looks like it should be a sexy thriller. Turns out it's just another visit to Joe Eszterhas World, where all the sex is nasty, all the men are corrupt and all the tedium is unbroken. Rated: 1.5/4 Aug 19, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews
