An absorbing and touching family drama set in the Israeli seaside town of the title. Go to Full Review

"Jaffa" is modeled on semi-glossy Egyptian mellers, but Yedaya lets the air out, leaving empty characters with no connections to each other or the audience. Best seen as a temporary blip in a promising career. Go to Full Review

Jaffa's schematic plot, predictably developed with stock characters that are never fleshed out, is insufficient to carry her pallid observations. Go to Full Review

06/17/2018 This is a heart-wrenching Romeo and Juliet story set in Jaffa with an Arab-Israeli Romeo and an Israeli Juliet. Writer-director Keren Yedaya lays bare prejudice and class differences in this French-Israeli-German-produced family drama. Dana Ivgy is the standout of the cast in the Juliet role, and was nominated for the Ophir Award for Best Actress. See more 06/15/2016 Fucking métaphore Palestine/Israël See more 06/07/2016 This authentic and bludgeoning portrayal of the fallout from an unexpected death is certainly riveting. When it works, its insistence to side-step excessiveness in its emotions, and the really good performances, shine. However, it's aggressively unredemptive ending and tinges of Nicolas-Sparks-like plotting makes this supremely sad melodrama often more "melo" than "drama". Their eldest daughter is carrying on a secret romance with one of the mechanics. Their plans to elope are halted by a very personal tragedy. This is the kind of film where the characters do not laboriously explain everything they are thinking to each other, so although the pace is slow, it's legitimately suspenseful. See more 01/06/2013 This film keeps you on your toes. There is no hint to where the plot will lead and no clear choices to be made for any of the characters. It was realistic in the sense that sometimes in life all you can do is make decision after decision, hope it is the right one and just keep living. That's what Jaffa is all about.
