Audience Member I really like the movie based on it being very true to the people involved! Very real! On that note, it is seriously fucked up! I am interested in crime and crime history but this takes it to a new level! Crime seriously affected this guy and I really want to know what made his wife who she is! They are a perfect match but that scares me! This movie makes me wonder about EVERY person involved! The cops even more than the writer and his perfect match of a wife! The dinner table discussions make me blush and uncomfortable and I use the c and p words freely and without restraint. That being said, any movie that has this effect on me is intense! Be aware that it is VERY intense! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I shouldn't be surprised, but James Ellroy is a freak. He's disarmingly honest, but also vaguely offputting. He also sounds like the narrator of the "Honey Badger" when he's reading his own work, inadvertently sapping the power from his normally powerful prose. Ellroy...please let someone else record your books on tape! Anyway, despite all of that, the subject matter is fascinating and the conversations are memorable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member A creepy-yet-compelling take of one man's obsession with murder, Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member This was a "documentary" in the loosest sense starring one of my favorite authors as he delves into his response and subsequent actions revolving around the murder of his mother juxtaposed with the Black Dahlia murder. Interesting, but clearly self serving. The only really good part of this film is the explanation of what happened to the Black Dahlia, which is the most logical one I've ever heard. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member A brutally honest and extremely interesting documentary about one of the greatest American writers working today. A brilliant piece of work. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member BBC-made documentary about "The demon dog of American literature". The self crowned king of American crime fiction, James Ellroy, is no doubt a genius. He is a free spirit and one entertaining motherfucker! The documentary covers everything from Bill Stoner and Ellroy's re-opening of Geneva Hilliker Ellroy's murdercase, his childhood (and ongoing) obsession with the Black Dahlia murder case, the promotion tour for "The Cold Six Thousand" and Ellroy's ongoing love affair with American history and bad men doing bad things. If you are a fan of James Ellroy you owe it to yourself to watch this documentary. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
