"What Had Happened Was…" isn’t so much a comedy special as a celebration of life. In its funniest moments... Foxx’s comic timing is so slick you forget he hasn’t done a stand-up set in two decades. Go to Full Review

Overblown and religiose it may be, but this jaws-of-death account is heart-on-sleeve and hard to take your eyes off. Go to Full Review

He’s here to tell his story and then draw a line under it, culminating with a celebration of his career highlights, as if giving himself a very public pep talk in front of a nurturing audience. Go to Full Review

In his opening moments onstage, Foxx declares, “you have no idea how good this feels.” Sixty-eight minutes later, you’ll likely feel as good as he does. Go to Full Review

Nae'il P Aug 31 I have to give respect to Jamie's fans, they ride hard for that guy. This was the worst comedy special I've seen in years. As far a stand up is concerned there was very little funny. It was basically a testimony service with some self reflection and appreciation for family and friends. I tried watching it the other day and stopped. Tried again today and stopped again. It’s wild and honestly heartbreaking to hear him open up about his near-death experience, but Foxx does find the comedy in the chaos. Some of the impressions are *chef’s kiss* (his Denzel always kills), and his resilience post-stroke is straight-up inspiring. You can feel how much getting back on that stage meant to him. That said, not everything lands. A few moments felt overly polished—like he was performing sincerity instead of living it—and that disconnect kept me from fully buying in. Still, it’s got heart, laughs, and that unmistakable Foxx charm. A solid comeback, just not quite legendary. A respectful 3 stars, with room to grow if he keeps digging deeper. To me that was the best ever, really funny to me and really spiritual. I think people in their 50ies to 90 years will appreciate that one even better. That one did it for me as the best stand up ever. No they did not ask me to give that review, that is my real and honest review. Jamie is extremely funny and talented. I learned a lot from this stand up. The value of humility and how God talks to us at times. A comedy special with no laughs is usually reserved for Ventriloquists and their demon puppets. See more Ben W Jan 24 There were a couple of touching moments and the part with becoming humble with the nurse was nicely done but I'm glad I had this on in the background while washing the dishes. So self-absorbed. See more Amy S Jan 15 Self absorbed much? I honestly used to like Jamie Foxx. That was the most narcissistic display of whatever that was that I've ever seen. I'm sure he's happy to be alive, but the only genuine emotion he portrayed was his absolute infatuation with himself. The rest was acting. If anyone fell for his attempts to draw sympathy and pity, then I suppose he's a talented actor. This Netflix special ruined him for me. It sickened me at my core. Just my opinion. Glad he pulled through his health crisis. A little humility goes a long ways though. See more Read all reviews
