Ben Sachs Chicago Reader This fifth feature by the brilliant Argentine filmmaker Lisandro Alonso is his first with professional actors and a period setting, yet it meshes thematically with his other work. Jun 11, 2015 Full Review Peter Keough Boston Globe Alonso sustains an atmosphere of otherworldly immanence in a vivid setting, with a style involving long takes with characters posed as if in tableaux vivants. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 11, 2015 Full Review Walter V. Addiego San Francisco Chronicle Viewers who can accept a defiantly slow pace, a few loose plot threads and a directorial style that works by intimation, will be rewarded. Rated: 3/4 May 20, 2015 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine Every camera move (or lack thereof) crackles with purpose, and the film moves towards its confounding finale with such pleasurable assurance that I’m glad not to know. Jan 23, 2023 Full Review Rosa Parra Latinx Lens An intimate gorgeously shot period piece anchored by a subtle performance from Mortensen. Rated: 3/5 Jul 3, 2022 Full Review Jordan M. Smith IONCINEMA.com Visually sumptuous and impeccably acted, the film uses the rich landscapes of Patagonia, as well as the pliancy of the human face to subtly convey our anxieties rising to the fore, taking hold and painting a reality of its own bleak making. Audience Member It's a really slow movie, no music, no dialogues. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Eitan D VERY slow pace, non linear plot, very art-housy. I liked it due to the cinematography but a bit too slow & couldn't connect the ending to the movie Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/20 Full Review Audience Member Beautifully set in rural Argentina offering some beautiful cinematography, this is a film of few words which rewards viewers' patience, albeit perhaps not with rewards sought. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I was very surprised to see this highly rated on RT! It's definitely not an easy or conventional film but this is why it works so well. I saw this film on a whim, simply needed to see any foreign film for a college course. I simply chose the one with Viggo and I was not disappointed. Jauja is one of the most unique films I have ever seen. The absence of dialogue is strange but works extremely well, reflecting the loneliness of life in the desert. The cinematography with its long and deliberate shots is absolutely gorgeous. The second half of the film is where this movie shines. Just as the desert draws in Dennisen this film draws in the viewer. This is truly one to lose yourself in and hopefully you do! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review jim w A bit of a mind twister, but ... replace the North Sea for the South Atlantic and tundra for desert and you end up with a Lisandro Alonso film that could fit, with a twist, into Scandinavian art. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Just a failed attempt to imitate Meek's Cutoff, you know Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
