Critics Consensus

Illogical, tension-free, and filled with cut-rate special effects, Jaws: The Revenge is a sorry chapter in a once-proud franchise.

Jason Bailey Flavorwire 'Jaws: The Revenge' bears the marks of its rushed production, from the seemingly first-draft screenplay to its sloppy execution to the slender running time (under 90 minutes without credits) to the generally cheap look and feel. Benjamin C The best movie in the shark saga Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/20/25 Full Review Nicholas G Last time i checked sharks dont roar Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/18/25 Full Review SkyRo P Jaws: The Revenge (1987) is one of the most baffling and disappointing entries in the legendary Jaws franchise. For a series built on oceanic terror and suspense, this film bizarrely spends most of its time on land, focusing on a flat, drawn-out story arc that barely involves the shark at all. It’s more about the fear of the shark than the actual presence of one—which raises the question: why even make this a shark movie? The acting is painfully stiff, and none of the death scenes feel convincing or impactful. The characters show little to no emotion, even when confronted with tragedy. The entire plot hinges on the mother’s belief that the shark is somehow targeting her family out of revenge… which is absurdly implausible, especially considering everyone else in the movie seems to shrug it off like it’s no big deal. This film feels like a low-budget imitation of what Jaws once was. It lacks the tension, the fear, the mystery—everything that made the original iconic. If Steven Spielberg saw this, I’m sure he had the same reaction many fans did: What the hell were we thinking? If there’s any redemption to be had, it’s this—Jaws is overdue for a proper reboot. With today’s CGI and a grounded, thrilling script, a modern reimagining could bring the terror of the deep back to life for a whole new generation. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/08/25 Full Review Chris B Not the best of the franchise, 1 and 2 are streets ahead, but this is much better than the 3rd installment. The reasons for the poor ratings baffle me, it's a story about a family of sharks targeting a family of humans, the whole story is illogical, so why make this your exception? It's a reasonable attempt at carrying on a much loved franchise, I think people need to be less snobby. It's a horror, a monster movie, not a documentary. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/06/25 Full Review Nick O I do love the well crafted precision of the original Jaws, but I also love Jaws 4 for the exact opposite reason. Did you know sharks could roar? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/01/25 Full Review Paul K Keeps you on your tails/revenge is why the shark followed them Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
