Serena Donadoni indieWire Concert pianist Marie Dandin is not only the focus of You Will Be Mine, but the narrative mirrors her emotional swings during a tumultuous year at the Lyons National Conservatory. Rated: B- Nov 1, 2012 Full Review Sarah Manvel Critic's Notebook Hollywood stopped making this type of self-loathing film some time ago, and you have to wonder why France is still singing this very dull song. Frans G Synopsis: Young Marie moves with her piano to Lyon to the house of a former childhood friend, to study at the conservatoire. This childhood friend, Emma, a few years older than Marie, develops a sexual obsession with Marie. Marie does not know how to deal with this, she and her studies suffer, and she allows herself to be seduced by Emma several times against her will. Emma's unhealthy jealousy and strong urges cause cross-border scenes and finally a reversal of roles. PRO - Interesting theme - Good acting, natural with convincing characters - Beautiful cinematography - You get sympathy for the bad girl CONTRA - A rippling beginning and a somewhat contrived ending Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/16/24 Full Review Audience Member As well as being poorly directed and written, this movie was pretty offensive. I felt like I was watching a propaganda film about the danger of predatory, crazy lesbians. Did Kirk Cameron make this movie? To be fair I couldn't finish it, it was so bad, but let me guess, does the main character finally learn to play that piano piece "avec passion?" Too bad the filmmakers couldn't take all these elements they gathered and make a decent film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member This film is just like it's main character: it has no idea what it wants to do. And that's the way it ends too, 'not with a bang, but a whimper.' Even at only a few clicks beyond an hour and a half, enduring this was interminable. When will we given a clue as to where this mush movie is going? Quick plot summary reveals a talented female musical prodigy off to study at a prestigious institute to see if she has the chops for a career as a concert pianist. She ends up rooming with a young female friend of the family, whose fascination with the pupil has more to do with her being gay and having the hots for her, which turns into obsession. Will the pianist realize she is a repressed lesbian herself, awoken by the beautiful roommate? Will she throw away her career rolling in the hay with a self-centered and egotistical boy student? Will she resist both sexual advances and (what the heck, since her family is pouring all their resources and energy into it) concentrate on her musical career? I suppose the intent was to evoke tension, but it is actually tedium that is the result. We get a little of each is a sort of 'spin the wheel' Russian roulette series of vignettes. At least there is luscious, passionate music to be heard, with genuine virtuosos doing the playing. That alone kept me watching/listening. What I found perplexing and even a bit annoying is that the writers want us to believe that the pianist is totally gorgeous and sexually appealing, whereas the roommate is supposed to be a bit odd looking at best. Whereas in reality, the actresses who play these roles are the exact opposites! Young pianist is ordinary looking. Roommate is exotically beautiful (being of mixed French Breton and Vietnamese heritage). This makes the latter appear to be sincere in her longing, whereas the former becomes vapid and a tad idiotic. In the end, our prodigy triumphs in her graduation concert, and the spurned woman (a medical student, by the way, though she only studies once) is carried off in some type of a coma after mysteriously collapsing moments after embracing her longed for love. Recommendation? Google the score and You Tube the music. And if you are into beauty, look up the hauntingly lovely Isild Le Besco . 'Bon chance!' (The Netflix film is in French, with subtitles). Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member My review: http://themuletamer.com/1/post/2014/10/movie-review-of-you-will-be-mine.html Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member You'd think that a film this trashy and blitheringly idiotic would at least be able to provide some campy entertainment. However, French thriller You Will Be Mine puts the final nail in it's coffin by being very tedious as well as completely stupid. You Will Be Mine is a potboiler about two female college students sharing an apartment together, and one of them develops an unhealthy obsession with the other. The problems with the film are several. None of the characters in the film resemble intelligent human beings. The protagonist especially makes a series of stupid decisions; I eventually lost all sympathy and patience for this idiot. The antagonist's psychological characteristics are contrived, unconvincing, and frustratingly juvenile. All this makes a film that the audience cannot possibly take serious in any way. But the film takes itself seriously. Very, very seriously. The film moves at a slow leisurely pace that better and more intelligent films have used to slowly build up tension and atmosphere. In You Will Be Mine, it just makes the film unbearably dull. You Will Be Mine is a pretentious, uninspired, dull film that provides nothing new for it's familiar premise. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member It's about unrequited love. I feel bad for Emma, she looks sad and pathetic through out.
