Peter Bradshaw Guardian A John Woo-chaperoned, Michelle Yeoh-starring martial arts adventure is a bit run-of-the-mill. Rated: 2/5 Feb 14, 2013 Full Review Owen Williams Empire Magazine Come for the crunching fight sequences and balletic wire-fu, stay for some surprisingly affecting character moments. Rated: 4/5 Feb 11, 2013 Full Review Philip French Observer (UK) After a decent enough opening it becomes a fairly ordinary affair, the principal attraction residing in the heroine's weirdly flexible sword. Feb 17, 2013 Full Review Jamie Healy Radio Times A female warrior attempts to leave her killing days behind in this polished but overblown Chinese period swordplay adventure. Rated: 3/5 Feb 15, 2013 Full Review Allan Hunter Daily Express (UK) The flashing blades and swirling choreography of the endless fight scenes and the charisma of Yeoh keep you engaged but the end result falls far short of her Crouching Tiger triumph a decade ago. Rated: 2/5 Feb 15, 2013 Full Review Anton Bitel Eye for Film the film uses its wire-fu trappings to allegorise Buddhist notions of self-transformation in a world of illusions. Throw in some inventive chopsocky tempered by romance, and you have a fatalistic wuxia about the martial pursuit of a "normal life". Feb 15, 2013 Full Review Read all reviews

Shawn G Good story, nice twists, good martial art, and an honest love story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/25/22 Full Review Audience Member Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is still the best but this is one of the most unforgettable wuxia movies up there with Ashes of Time, Hero, The Swordsman series, Bride with White Hair, Shadow, 14 Blades, Seven Swords, Once Upon a Time in China series etc. Such memorable characters as Drizzle (Michelle Yeoh) and the 3 other assassins: Wheel King, the Magician, and Lei Bin. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member If you are a fan of the wire-fu, mystical, sword fighting type martial arts movie, than this movie will not disappoint. However, this description is really all there is to this movie. There is no depth in the story or the characters, other than what is contained in the myths at the center of the movies mythos. There is nothing out of the norm for this type of movie, and nothing beyond the norm for this type of movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Not the best but not the worst in genre. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Solid wuxia movie with a good story, well-used dramatic elements and some gorgeous fight scenes. Crouching Tiger 2 can only wish it had been this good. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member A group of assassins invades a temple and, after a considerable amount of bloodhsed, steals a corpse that's rumored to possess mystical properties. However, one of the assassins (Michelle Yeoh) breaks away from the gang with a piece of the corpse, changes her face, and attempts to settle down in a quiet life with a seemingly average man (Jung Woo-sung). This leads to a cavalcade of betrayal, double crosses, lies, murder, revelation, and fast-paced kung fu complemented by plenty of wire stunts. Su Chao-Pin directs Reign of Assassins with a taut pace that has a lot of frenetic jump cuts; John Woo's co-directing credit leads me to believe that the occasional uses of slow-motion atmospherics were the result of his consultation. Reign of Assassins isn't exactly the deepest wuxia film ever made, but it is a spirited affair that includes all the action scenes that this genre calls for while leaving enough room for the interpersonal melodrama that this genre tends to benefit from.
