Audience Member A wonderful film with a lot of depth. Highly recommended. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Directed anonymously by Wang Xiaoshuai during his years as a blacklisted filmmaker, Frozen focuses on the contemporary Chinese art scene in an attempt at psychologically coming to terms with post-Tiananmen China and the mindstate of it's youths. As in Zhang Yuan's Beijing Bastards, Beijing life is represented as emotionally and intellectually barren, an emptiness perfectly personified by the late great Jia Hongshen, seemingly carrying all the weight of society's silent repression on his own. In hindsight, Frozen is of course a harrowing watch, as the paralysing listlessness and nagging depression of Jia's character possibly mirror that of his own. Dedicated to the realness of his performances, Jia not only played, but became his characters on screen, making his decision to leave us even sadder and the emptiness he left greater. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member (***): Interesting low-budget foreign film. Well-acted and directed. NOTE: According to IMDB, this didn't come to the U.S. until 1997. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
