Stanley Tucci takes you into the poignant and sometimes humorous world of New York City in the 1940s. "Joe Gould's Secret" is the true story of two men, one of whom would tell the other's story: famed The New Yorker writer Joseph Mitchell and New York bohemian Joe Gould.

Gavin Smith Film Comment Magazine 04/10/2018
The film is too lackluster and inconsequential to pack any punch. Director Tucci's mise-en-scne is too self-regarding and fussy, the just-so period design is stifling, the cinematography arid. Go to Full Review

Stanley Tucci's lovingly crafted film pretends to be about Joe Gould, and all the time its real subject is hidden right there before us in plain view. Go to Full Review

01/28/2014 I enjoyed watching this movie that is based on a true story. Interesting, and sad. See more 09/22/2012 A hidden gem this one. See more 08/09/2012 One of those nice little films like Unstrung Heroes and (also by Tucci) Big Night, that appreciative fans remember and revere, but film criticism in general has shrugged off in favor of bigger, more successful indie hits. Get a copy and watch. You'll see that great films don't have to be Great with a capital G. See more 05/06/2012 Literally waited 10 years to watch this movie because I don't believe it was ever released on VHS when I first wanted to watch it and although it has been saved for years in my Netflix queue as a DVD, it never ever was available in the "currently available" queue. I got tired of waiting so I upgraded my Netflix account to streaming and was able to watch it that way! The entire cast was fabulous, especially Ian Holm and Stanley Tucci (who also directed the film). Holm should have been nominated for acting awards in this role, but sadly he wasn't. Story and screenplay excellent. Guess it was worth the 10-year wait! See more 03/24/2012 Kind of fascinating. But also kind of falls short. See more 02/16/2010 Good on you Stanley Tucci. You are as good a director as you are a performer. What a delightful tale. See more Read all reviews
