Critics Consensus

While John Carter looks terrific and delivers its share of pulpy thrills, it also suffers from uneven pacing and occasionally incomprehensible plotting and characterization.

For the most part, the first "live action" feature by Andrew Stanton, is graphically splendiferous and enjoyably nonsensical. Go to Full Review

Isn't the disaster some industry observers predicted, but it's not the high-gloss masterpiece some of us hoped for either. Go to Full Review

John rides a rhino into battle, fights great white apes in the arena, and leaps great distances like Superman in the early, original comic books. Go to Full Review

It’s watchable and, at times, an enjoyable film, just not wowing or immediately satisfying in the way so many of Burroughs’ readers had hoped it would be. Go to Full Review

John Carter is a good summer movie in March but, with the exception of that one fleeting segment, it's not a great movie at any time of year. Go to Full Review

Thomas D @Thom1967 4d John Carter is not at all the disaster some critics said it is ! In my opinion IT’S A MODERN PEPLUM… It has the huge sets we used to see in Ancient Rome or Antique Greece movies of the 50’s and 60’s. (Most of it CGI, ok…), the fine costume to go with, the Martian technology looks a bit retro (which is pretty cool). The actors are definitely famous and very convincing ! Please don’t listen to the guys who criticise while being comfortable in their couch, feeling superior… while they often don’t have the beginning of the culture necessary to judge or even understand what they see… Make up your own mind, JOHN CARTER of MARS deserves it. See more S J @Avatar7 6d Great sci-fi action adventure movie and fun to watch. Better than many Star Wars movies for sure but whoever named this move should have been sacked because the title sounds boring and tells you nothing about the movie. I also read the movie had "one of the worst marketing campaigns in movie history". That's probably also the reason I never went to see it in the cinema but luckily I discovered it later and immediately bought it for my 3D collection. Have watched it several times since so I definitely recommend it. See more David B @Fizzi Dec 6 I enjoyed this film immensely. It's fun, full of action, has relatable characters and us imaginative in it's implementation. I don't really know why it doesn't get better reviews overall. If you enjoy a good fantasy romp it's highly recommended! See more Yeimy R Nov 28 I love this movie 🍿 my husband and I watch it all the time 🍿🍿 See more Sebastian D Nov 9 A Pulpy Sci-Fi Stumble. John Carter is a pulpy sci-fi adventure that trips over its sprawling lore and rushed pacing, failing to leap from page to screen with the bite to captivate. Taylor Kitsch’s Carter has earnest grit, but the script’s exposition overload and meandering quests leave the Barsoom saga feeling flat, the 2012 blockbuster trend wasted on a narrative without narrative punch. Lynn Collins’s Dejah sparks allure, Willem Dafoe’s Tark growls menace, but the ensemble drowns in CGI spectacle that overwhelms without wonder. What should have been a swashbuckling Burroughs revival devolves into repetitive skirmishes and lore dumps, the red planet a barren canvas for derivative drudgery. It dazzles in spurts but crumbles into obscurity, a near-miss that teases epic scope but delivers dusty disappointment.
