Sheila Norman-Culp Associated Press The movie is silly, silly, silly -- and proud of it. There's a good chance you will be giggling helplessly at some point in Johnny English, and 7- to 14-year-olds will be giddy throughout. Glafira Regina O – He’s got a long scar on his cheek. Shaped like a banana. – Which cheek? – Both. Like… a bunch of bananas. © Johnny in an awkward situation Worldwide box office: 132 million against a 40 million budget. It may not have been an instant hit, but eventually, it led to two sequels to Johnny English. However… A parody always implies humour — and the humour here is spot on! Unexpected situations, the clumsy antics of Agent Johnny (whose surname says it all) constantly make the audience laugh or at least grin. And as we all know, only a skilful actor can convincingly play a clumsy person, so it’s no surprise that this role became a standout for Rowan Atkinson. His Johnny balances awkwardness with courage and a knack for escaping trouble — more or less intact. His confident gaze adds a touch of charm and sex appeal, just like Bond himself. Johnny’s endearing personality won over audiences, and Atkinson even received a special award for the role. And since this is a spy action movie, of course, there’s a gorgeous woman at the hero’s side! Natalie Imbruglia most likely got the part not least because of her big, expressive eyes — the kind you write poems and songs about. The romantic (or rather, flirtatious) subplot develops by genre rules, inseparable from the spy missions: tailing enemies, chases, gunfire, dramatic reveals — all set to lively music. Johnny English seems to have everything that makes the genre so enjoyable. The film playfully pokes fun at several stereotypes at once: the English through French eyes and the French through English ones. The tidy script avoids any offence, allowing the audience to laugh freely without crossing lines. Pascal Sauvage (John Malkovich) is almost as colourful a figure as Johnny himself — his voice, stare, and mannerisms are all delightfully theatrical, and he’s the kind of villain you almost want to imitate. We also can’t ignore Bough, played by the brilliant Ben Miller. Both agent and sidekick are equally likeable, and it’s heartwarming to see how they help each other out and gently point out mistakes. Exemplary coworker chemistry, wouldn’t you say? If not for a couple of overly awkward toilet scenes, Johnny English could’ve been a perfect parody masterpiece. But even so, it remains one of those films that’s an absolute pleasure to rewatch years later. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/22/25 Full Review Hazel N Johnny English is a movie that makes a otherwise serious movie into a very well-made comedy with a starring cast for its time. The visual and sound effects are pretty good (8.9/10) and the music fits really well with the moment. If you like/d the Mr.Bean series or movie you will definitely love this movie (that also may be because both Mr.Bean and Johnny are played by Rowan Atkinson). Overall, the movie is not perfect but it has a charm to it that makes it funny every time you watch it. I definitely recommend it. (avaliação 6.5/10) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/21/25 Full Review Melissa L I'm not terribly fond of Rowan Atkinson's "Mr. Bean," but when I saw this listed on Roku, I figured I'd check it out,and I wasn't disappointed. I thought it was very funny...I recommend it, even if you don't like "Mr. Bean." This is so different than that show. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review thiago s Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/02/25 Full Review Shaun R All good innocent fun. Nothing pretentious and quite funny. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
