Joe M Johnny Tsunami and Brink represent the pinnacle of DCOM, and for good reason. Johnny Tsunami has the action and fish-out-of-water story for the kids. (And it hits with epic nostalgia for a guy in his late 30s now). But the adult theme is damn strong… a father and son on opposite ends of the spectrum: one who took life TOO casually, one who took life TOO seriously, and both feeling the regret of how that has impacted their relationship over time. But also, more subtly, the theme of how one’s obligations and pressures to provide for your family can rob you of your joy for life and the enjoyment of family. There is nothing more real than that for fathers in this day and age, and it had me tearing up. Wish the conflict was as easy as looking at a photo album to fix though! Aside from that, the writing and acting are totally acceptable and top notch for DCOM. And Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa had no business being as good in this movie as he was (and being the coolest granddad EVER). Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/16/25 Full Review Ed R Good nostalgia but meant for kids. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review Nate L. Brandon Baker shines as Johnny, a laid-back surfer forced to adapt to a world of prep schools, cliques, and cold weather. But what makes this film iconic isn’t just the boarding it’s the heart. The relationship between Johnny and his grandfather the legendary Johnny Tsunami is packed with wisdom, warmth, and that classic Disney magic. Whether you watched it in ’99 or are just discovering it now, Johnny Tsunami is an unforgettable ride with timeless vibes. A DCOM legend — period. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/03/25 Full Review Ava S like 3.9 why was that actually lowkey interesting lol- Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Monsol E Like most DCOMs of the time, it's fun, but flawed. The setup of "kid from the tropics gets moved to a ice cube" is solid, I like how Johnny always keeps his positive attitude, even when everything's out to wreck him, and grandpa ruled! But the preppy bullies, the DUUUUUMB plot about the divided mountain, and Johnny's jerk-for-no-reason dad all dragged it down. Still, this is a pretty good watch, if it sounds like you'll enjoy it, you probably will. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/18/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is about fast paced action and energy with a lot on the line in terms of competition and self worth but what it also does is spotlight friendship perseverance and acceptance of change and growth while narratively it's surface leveled the actors do a tremendous job conveying what the story fails to do Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
