After serving in the Navy, 29-year-old John F. Kennedy (Paul Rudd) decides to run for congressional office in Boston. Based on a bestselling book, Gilbert Cates's film reveals the obstacles that Kennedy is up against at the start of his political career in 1946. Kennedy is concerned with his public image, and wants to avoid people making assumptions based on his social status. He enlists the help of his father, Joseph P. Kennedy (William Prince), and his maternal grandfather (Burgess Meredith).
