Nicolas Rapold New York Times [A] timely tribute from one cartoonist to another. Mar 15, 2022 Full Review Alissa Simon Variety The strong subject matter as well as the eponymous subject's storied life makes one wish for a longer running time than 72 minutes. Oct 23, 2021 Full Review Cath Clarke Guardian It's a delicate, thoughtful film, moving and real. Rated: 4/5 Jan 25, 2021 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills Drawn in a simple but evocative graphic-novel style, this is not an aesthetically dazzling animated feature, but its unshowy nature underlines the considerable emotional power of the story. Mar 15, 2022 Full Review Laura Clifford Reeling Reviews cartoonist Aurel directs the film in a number of distinct styles, his own modern, colorful approach used for the storyteller, Bartolis own work animated in flashback Rated: B+ Mar 9, 2022 Full Review Rubén Rosario MiamiArtZine If you only have time to watch one film during this year's festival, this touching, exquisitely rendered tribute from one artist to another makes a persuasive case for that coveted spot. Audience Member Highly recommend - have watched it twice. Based on a true story, Aurel's magnificent animated feature film introduces us to Josep Bartoli (1910-1995), the Spanish illustrator who fled Franco's dictatorship and wound up in a brutal internment camp in France. Befriended by a guard, we follow Bartoli's escape to Paris and then Mexico where he became friends with artists Frieda Kahlo and Diego Rivera. "Josep" offers broad appeal - a compelling personal story of survival; world history; French and Spanish culture; illustration; the relationship between art and war; human compassion; the healing power of art. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Between 2 and 3 stars (although I have not seen able to watch it until the end). More relevant for the real story it tells than for its cinematographical values. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
