Critics Consensus

Writer/director Jeff Baena and an able cast of comedic actors strike a unique, disarmingly heartfelt blend of dark humor and tragedy with Joshy.

Katie Walsh Los Angeles Times It's a fascinating depiction of the way men do -- or don't -- confront life's tragedies and traumas. Aug 17, 2016 Full Review Christy Lemire RogerEbert.com You probably wouldn't want to spend that much time with these people yourself, but at least they're never boring. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 12, 2016 Full Review Adam Graham Detroit News "Joshy" is like a weekend with random friends: fun and familiar, but rarely any deeper than the personalities involved. Don't look for more and you'll be fine. Rated: B- Aug 12, 2016 Full Review Allison Rose FlickDirect Joshy is a little underwhelming when you first watch it, but the more you think about it and let it marinate, it tends to grow on you. Rated: 4.5/5 Sep 19, 2019 Full Review Sean Mulvihill FanboyNation.com It takes Joshy a little while to find its footing after a truly shocking opening scene, but once it does there's a nice story about friendship in the toughest times. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 1, 2018 Full Review Allyson Johnson The Young Folks ... Joshy would have succeeded had it felt comfortable enough it its own skin to play out without a third act twist that ultimately derails everything that has been set up. Alexander I It's not a romantic movie but it's funny and I laughed about the jokes many many times. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/26/23 Full Review Audience Member 0.77 laughs/min. Meh. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Dang... I can't believe the low audience score. It's a little bro-ey but also feels very real to how a group of guys would handle the events involved - no spoilers. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/16/20 Full Review Audience Member Decent watch, not expecting to watch again, and can't recommend. With Middleditch on the cover, and not knowing anything about the movie, I expected a decent attempt at a comedy, and I recognized other faces. And my heart lit up at the surprise of Alison Brie, which became a crash too quickly for me. The rest of the movie is just watching aggressive, controlling idiots fight with each other about the situation while the two people with the most problems try and fail to manage everything. The "go with the flow" attitude could be a good lesson for the movie, but for the absolute shattering in the 3rd act that says, "Here's reality, deal with your shit." Instead you end up with a "do what you can" lesson that feels really depressing. I feel like we shouldn't make depressing comedies, but this movie obviously had an important meaning for someone. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member The real moments in this movie feel uncomfortably real. Which is a good thing because they are all pretty uncomfortable moments. I kept thinking about scenes in this movie for two or three days after watching it. It definitely made an impact and made me think. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member "Remember guys positive vibes" For the average viewer the opening scene may be too dark - rightfully so. If it was too dark for you then you are an average joe. As the movie plays out, it's building the idea that friends are supposed to be there for you, and while they have the right intentions, their actions don't align because of men's culture. They never address the trauma. They try to push it down with booze, drugs, strippers and hookers - never acknowledging what's really fucking them up. Incredible acting, real, hard storyline that captures what it's like being a man in this day and age. Life is complicated and we all want it to be simple.
