Sams K Nothing special for me, good directing and photography but definitely not scary or disturbing Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review S C It was like watching paint dry - so tedious and boring. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/19/24 Full Review Jackson87 C Ju-On: The Grudge (2002), directed by Takashi Shimizu, is a notable entry in the Japanese horror genre that has garnered a cult following for its unsettling atmosphere and chilling narrative structure. The film introduces viewers to a cursed house in Tokyo, where a horrific event has occurred, resulting in a vengeful spirit that haunts anyone who enters. One of the film’s strengths is its ability to create an eerie ambiance, effectively using sound and minimalistic visuals to evoke a sense of dread. Shimizu employs a non-linear storytelling technique, weaving together multiple narratives that explore the lives of various characters affected by the curse. This approach adds layers to the storytelling, though it can sometimes feel disjointed and confusing for viewers trying to piece together the timeline. The film features several memorable scares, including the iconic appearances of the ghostly figures Kayako and her son Toshio. Their haunting presence is effectively unsettling, and the film’s use of jump scares is well-timed, providing genuine moments of fright. However, some viewers may find that the reliance on these tropes becomes predictable over time. While Ju-On excels in atmosphere and tension, its character development leaves much to be desired. Many of the characters are underdeveloped, making it difficult for audiences to fully invest in their fates. This can detract from the emotional impact of the film, as viewers may find themselves disconnected from the characters’ plights. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Justin T This contains strong prolonged terror, fear, tension, scares, horror and so on. It is very similar to the American version but more confusing. I do prefer the American one. This is just as scary though and really builds up a petrifying punch. It is good having two versions of the same film as the timings and the like are slightly different, prolonging the longevity of the film as you can essentially watch it twice! This is highly recommended and will scare you. See both versions. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/12/24 Full Review Shane C The Ju-on Franchise is very hit or miss. Luckily, this movie is the best of them. It's suspenseful, creepy and there's a looming feeling of dread all over the place. Takako Fuji playing Kayako is the best part for sure. I just wish the rest of the movies were like this.
