Frederick Highly underrated movie… Rated 5/5 Stars •  Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/23/25 Full Review Elizabeth J This has been one of my favourite movies for a number of years and spotting it had a low rating compelled me to come join RT to rate it myself. The story is completely unique, nothing I’ve seen anywhere else. Yes, you have to pay attention to keep up but I love a movie that keeps me thinking about it after it’s finished. The cinematography and special effects are fab and the acting is believable and draws you in. All in all, well worth the watch as far as I’m concerned. The “Tech Rococo” aesthetic — with its fusion of intricate ornamentation and high-tech futurism — creates a universe that feels both ancient and futuristic. This isn’t your standard chrome-and-neon sci-fi; this is a world where wealth and power are gilded, embroidered, and monstrously beautiful. One of the film’s most fascinating inventions are the gravity boots and space gliders — movement here isn’t just a means of transport, it’s almost balletic. The aerial choreography, particularly in the Chicago chase scene, is both elegant and kinetic, a perfect marriage of form and function. The core concept — that humans are harvested as a life-extension commodity — is chilling, but woven into the plot with enough nuance and metaphor to be more than just a dark twist. It’s a sci-fi echo of real-world exploitation, consumerism, and class division. The Abrasax family isn’t just villainous; they are operatic personifications of excess, detachment, and immortal boredom. What makes Jupiter Ascending stand out is its willingness to go beyond the expected. Yes, there are spaceships and battles, but they’re secondary to the film’s thematic ambitions. The romantic subplot may feel melodramatic to some, but it fits the tone — after all, this is not minimalist sci-fi, it’s space opera. Is it perfect? No — the dialogue occasionally falters, and some tonal shifts are jarring. But it is bold. It’s a film that doesn’t condescend, that assumes its audience can handle layered world-building, genre-mixing, and visual overload. It’s more Dune meets The Fifth Element than Star Wars, and that’s precisely what makes it special. In a genre often afraid to be beautiful or strange, Jupiter Ascending soars unapologetically.
