Critics Consensus

Jurassic Park III is darker and faster than its predecessors, but that doesn't quite compensate for the franchise's continuing creative decline.

Joe Williams St. Louis Post-Dispatch A roaring success. Rated: 3/4 Jun 25, 2025 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald The third film is neither as scary nor as serious as the first two. It borrows heavily from its predecessors and the Alien series, and runs out of energy. Lkung T My opinion. This is the worst jurassic movie of the franchise. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/01/25 Full Review Zach W. With the return of Sam Neill as Dr. Alan Grant, Jurassic Park III has a strong lead character, but the film is still repetitive and formulaic. Though Jurassic Park III is structurally formulaic with its introduction of new characters and the overall conflict, the film adds even more iconic dinosaurs that establish creatively different ways to scare the audience. Directed by Joe Johnston, Jurassic Park III is significantly less visually impressive as the first two films of the franchise. There is an obvious lack of style when it comes to capturing the action set pieces, but it is always hard to match the prowess of Steven Spielberg. Though the film is exaggeratedly grey in its color palette, the incorporation of new dinosaurs is exhilarating in its refreshing nature. While the structure is nearly identical to the first two films, the chaos added by including new species like Spinosaurus and Pterodactyls is extremely fun. The return to Isla Sorna is generic with its reintroduction, but the scale of capturing the severity of the film’s conflict still succeeds. The new supporting cast is drastically weaker than Jurassic Park, but William H. Macy, Téa Leoni, and Alessandro Nivola are still interesting. Sam Neill encompasses the soul of the film and maintains his charm from Jurassic Park. Overall, Jurassic Park III is not a drastic drop in quality from the previous film, but it definitely does seem like this franchise does not know where to go. Director Joe Johnston brings new ideas to this installment despite an obvious lack of aesthetic appeal. The darkness of this film does make the film feel slightly more intimidating, but its intensity does not feel organically created. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/26/25 Full Review Stuart R It’s just nostalgic. It’s a guilty pleasure.🍀 Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/24/25 Full Review Mike V This time, it's not just a walk in the park! Jurassic Park III is a 2001 American science fiction adventure action film directed by Joe Johnston 🦖 It’s good 🙂 Worth a watch. I’d recommend it if you like this genre 👍🏼 In need of funds for research, Dr. Alan Grant accepts a large sum of money to accompany Paul and Amanda Kirby on an aerial tour of the infamous Isla Sorna. It isn't long before all hell breaks loose and the stranded wayfarers must fight for survival as a host of new -- and even more deadly -- dinosaurs try to make snacks of them. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/22/25 Full Review Adam S Jurassic Park III unfortunately brings some of the worst characters into the franchise along with a generic plot. But the film never overstays it's welcome, and still gives us some great dinosaur action that makes this film very worthwhile. Rating: 69% 🍅 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/30/25 Full Review Ash P Yeah, I'm not surprised that no one likes this one. I've had the DVD of this film, too, and while I thought it was cool back then, I was just young. Now that I'm older as I'm on the road to Jurassic World: Rebirth, it's just right in the middle. It still has that wonder, yet it does not have that flair. It's got its intensity with the dinosaurs, yet it does not exceed its expectations. Technically, your run-in-the-mill sequel doesn't live up to the first film nor the Lost World. So the story follows Alan Grant, played again by Sam Neill, and his assistant, Billy Brennan, played by Alessandro Nivola, hired by Paul and Amanda Kirby, played by William H. Macy and Tea Leoni, to "escourt" them to Isla Sorna in return to fund Alan's funding for his velociraptor research that's been struggling. Yet as the plot goes, it turns out that the Kirby's lied and wanted someone to fly them to the island to find their son, Eric, played by Trevor Morgan, who was stuck on that island when he and some folks were parasailing illegally. So aside from finding Eric, who had survived on his own impressively, they also had to run from a group of velociraptors who were chasing them because Billy stole their eggs without thinking as well as a spinosaurus who were chasing them since the start of the movie when they'd arrived on the island. I do enjoy acting with Alan Grant and Eric Kirby. I hate being that guy, but the Kirby's who lied to Sam are annoying. The wife, especially, since she never stops screaming and gets into a fair amount of trouble. I like Tea Leoni, yet the role she was given just wasn't it. You wanna know what's weird, we see Ellie Slatter, played again by Laura Dern, in the beginning and a couple of more times and sadly does nothing. I'll tell you one thing, she is Alan's ex-girlfriend and she is married with two kids. Talk about a waste, if I have to be one hundred percent honest. The dinosaurs are still impressive even though I'm kind of mixed with the effects used in this. I love the sequence with the pteranodons. The times with the velociraptors are still nice. The spinosaurus sequences were okay. I like it when having to explore more on the abandoned InGen facility since they're looking for Eric, though it's just one scene. I also have to admit that some of the green screen effects felt a little off. By the way, the army and the navy at the end, what? Oh, well. Gotta throw a bone or something, I guess. If anything, I'd rather the story revolve around Eric and not his parents since they bring danger. Sam getting in the middle of what Eric is going through would've been fine, too. For the record, this is the weakest of the Jurassic Park Trilogy. Just in the middle for me. If I were to watch Jurassic Park, this wouldn't be my pick. I'm giving it four and a half Alan Grant blowing through a velociraptor larnyx out of ten. 4.5/10. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
