Critics Consensus

Jurassic Park III is darker and faster than its predecessors, but that doesn't quite compensate for the franchise's continuing creative decline.

Edward Jay Epstein Wall Street Journal Jurassic Park III exemplifies Hollywood's standard practice of stomping a brilliant concept beyond recognition. Jun 27, 2019 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) At its best, it whips itself up into a nice, scary lather, but it shrivels to nothing between the set pieces, in an excess of fog, token bits of talk, and an absence of genuine, elemental awe. Jun 27, 2019 Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) Imagine my surprise, then, to find that Jurassic Park III not only beats the first JP and its sequel The Lost World into a cocked pith helmet, but also manages to be a perfectly enjoyable monster movie in its own right. Jun 27, 2019 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Threadbare. Rated: 1.5/4 Jun 9, 2025 Full Review Jim Ross TAKE ONE Magazine ...it's a dull regression to the mean [of blockuster filmmaking]. Although [the regressive portrayal of heteronormativity and feminism] is not at the forefront of the film's concerns, it is indicative of the lack of imagination the film has. Nov 27, 2024 Full Review Michael D. Reid Victoria Times Colonist (B.C., Canada) The Westjet of summer popcorn movies, a no-frills hot-weather adventure that gets the job done efficiently and leaves you feeling vaguely satisfied, even if it doesn't knock your socks off. Adam S Jurassic Park III unfortunately brings some of the worst characters into the franchise along with a generic plot. But the film never overstays it's welcome, and still gives us some great dinosaur action that makes this film very worthwhile. Rating: 69% 🍅 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/20/25 Full Review Ash P Yeah, I'm not surprised that no one likes this one. I've had the DVD of this film, too, and while I thought it was cool back then, I was just young. Now that I'm older as I'm on the road to Jurassic World: Rebirth, it's just right in the middle. It still has that wonder, yet it does not have that flair. It's got its intensity with the dinosaurs, yet it does not exceed its expectations. Technically, your run-in-the-mill sequel doesn't live up to the first film nor the Lost World. So the story follows Alan Grant, played again by Sam Neill, and his assistant, Billy Brennan, played by Alessandro Nivola, hired by Paul and Amanda Kirby, played by William H. Macy and Tea Leoni, to "escourt" them to Isla Sorna in return to fund Alan's funding for his velociraptor research that's been struggling. Yet as the plot goes, it turns out that the Kirby's lied and wanted someone to fly them to the island to find their son, Eric, played by Trevor Morgan, who was stuck on that island when he and some folks were parasailing illegally. So aside from finding Eric, who had survived on his own impressively, they also had to run from a group of velociraptors who were chasing them because Billy stole their eggs without thinking as well as a spinosaurus who were chasing them since the start of the movie when they'd arrived on the island. I do enjoy acting with Alan Grant and Eric Kirby. I hate being that guy, but the Kirby's who lied to Sam are annoying. The wife, especially, since she never stops screaming and gets into a fair amount of trouble. I like Tea Leoni, yet the role she was given just wasn't it. You wanna know what's weird, we see Ellie Slatter, played again by Laura Dern, in the beginning and a couple of more times and sadly does nothing. I'll tell you one thing, she is Alan's ex-girlfriend and she is married with two kids. Talk about a waste, if I have to be one hundred percent honest. The dinosaurs are still impressive even though I'm kind of mixed with the effects used in this. I love the sequence with the pteranodons. The times with the velociraptors are still nice. The spinosaurus sequences were okay. I like it when having to explore more on the abandoned InGen facility since they're looking for Eric, though it's just one scene. I also have to admit that some of the green screen effects felt a little off. By the way, the army and the navy at the end, what? Oh, well. Gotta throw a bone or something, I guess. If anything, I'd rather the story revolve around Eric and not his parents since they bring danger. Sam getting in the middle of what Eric is going through would've been fine, too. For the record, this is the weakest of the Jurassic Park Trilogy. Just in the middle for me. If I were to watch Jurassic Park, this wouldn't be my pick. I'm giving it four and a half Alan Grant blowing through a velociraptor larnyx out of ten. 4.5/10. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/20/25 Full Review Benjamin C It is the best movie of the Jurassic saga Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/19/25 Full Review THE NASHVILLE I Not the worst, but Tea Leoni and Will Macy make this too hammy alongside Neil and Nivola's charisma. The story's relatively compelling but it's kind of dreary and flat. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/19/25 Full Review Michael D L The worst of the original trilogy but the effects are decent Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/16/25 Full Review IH H Worst one. I can see why people complained about Jurassic park 3 for decades. Glad Jurassic world 2015 revived the franchise Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/10/25 Full Review Read all reviews
