Isaak Kohler (Maximilian Schell) is serving a 20-year prison sentence for a crime that countless people saw him commit. As lawyer Felix Spat (Thomas Heinze) was dining with Professor Winter (Hark Bohm), Kohler shot the professor dead without warning. Now, spurred by his daughter's sorrow, Kohler hires Spat to represent him in hope of procuring a retrial. However, Kohler refuses to reveal the motive behind the murder, while a media frenzy adds to the case's ambiguity.
