Audience Member Slickly shot and edited, this slightly offbeat movie is an ensemble of love stories, mostly sad ones. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty darn good for a debut effort. Good characters, insightful on relationships, especially the main one as it hits its seven year mark with complications. Zhang Yibai maybe tries to be a little too offbeat to tell this simple story, a few too many fade-to-black moments, but he is trying to make the realities dream like and ever so slightly jolting. His characters break the fourth wall and address the audience. He does a number of things that I generally dislike but its a sign of his talent that when all is said and done I really enjoyed the film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Offbeat in a good way, disjointed in a bad way, unfortunately the movie never catches up to the art. Enjoyable though, for sure. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member aka Spring Subway I must say that given the premise of the film (long term relationship in crisis, a subject for such masterpieces like Repast, Early Spring, I Fidanzati, Faces, etc) I was disappointed by how the director handled it. The film has a nice WKW-ish montage visual style (plus speed manipulation & similar use of voiceovers) but too often scenes are not allowed to play out naturally as Zhang prefers to take an ensemble approach to an essentially 2 player drama which just doesn't work. Many of the subplots involving the passengers on the subway feel too artificial and tacked on. The only ones that work are the ones with the teacher and the character played by director Zhang Yuan, but even then the minor characters are severely underdeveloped. Also I find the premise of subway highly unrealistic considering that for a city of millions of people, the subways trains are less crowded than the ones in NYC, even during rush hours. That said, Zhang seems to be a skilled at editng (there are some great dissolves and montages) but I think he overdid it for this debut. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Experimental in form but pretty ordinary in context. With his debut feature Zhang Yibai obviously intended to distance himself from other Chinese directors, be it 5th or 6th generation. I would say Zhang has more in common with young European directors than his Chinese colleagues, one of which, namely Zhang Yang, actually appears in this movie. Has some very fine moments, but as a whole feels a bit overambitious. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Read all reviews
