Pauline Kael The New Yorker The Tavianis themselves are flying high here: the images seem to comprise all memories of childhood pleasure and all nostalgia. The music, the sights, the longings that the children have evoked all come together. Sep 13, 2023 Full Review Martyn Auty Time Out This is a film of fierce sunlight, bleached rocks, dark interiors, silent stares, and dialogue as rough and sparse as the land. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Janet Maslin New York Times Kaos unfolds with the rapturous simplicity that was most apparent in Padre, Padrone, the first of the Taviani brothers' films to be released here, and that is even more mesmerizing this time. Yet Kaos also has an edge. May 20, 2003 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Recognized for the splendid landscape photography by Giuseppe Land. Audience Member This is the film that Buster Scruggs wanted to be. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member I saw this when it first came out. Now some 35 years later I still tell people this is one of the best movies of all time on my list. Why? I am writing this review now partly because I am promoting the film to be shown in my local film society, but also in reaction to he reviews on here that seem to have missed it. I think it is a really 'filmic' experience and as such probably needs to be seen in the format it was released in - on a wide screen in the dark, not on streaming or a small screen in a light room. The sensuality of this film, albeit rough, is at its core for me. It is not really about the stories it is about feelings and experiences - as the final section shows. Along with some of Picnic at Hanging Rock (original, not the awful TV remake) and the final sequence of Cinema Paradiso I think this has some of the most beautiful and haunting imagery ever shot. The Jar is by far the weakest for me and I confess to not really ever having understood its place in the film other than as light relief in what is quite an ordeal at times - except the reference back to characters in the final sequence may help. I do think that the journey to the final image has to be as long as it is - all 188 minutes. Perhaps modern audiences and a younger generation just do not adapt to that - we are all used to a rigid 90 minutes now. My advice is watch it in a cinema if you can, enter the world and experience (perhaps have a Sicilian meal first), with someone you love. Then tell me it is no good. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member One, No One and One Hundred Thousand... faces of Pirandello. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautiful set of tales that lean toward the allegorical with a rich vein of trust in human complexity (for good or ill). Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautiful, Stunning, Beyond words! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member A fabulous folkloric film!
