Audience Member Again made in the distinctive style that Mijke de Jong used in Bluebird and Tussenstand. She crawls behind her subjects and shows the most intimate and voyeuristic sides of their lives. In this movie she takes a young Russian girl, living in Amsterdam, whose mother is a prostitute and her older sister takes her first steps in the world of professional stripping. The problem with this movie is that ''Katia's sister'' is not a very good actress, she doesn't have the power to carry a whole movie, yet the camera is all the time focussed on her (hence the style). Positive is the charming sense of sisterly love that she shares with her sister Katia. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Watched this at TIFF'08... A Dutch film about a Russian family of women struggle to lead a normal life in Amsterdam. Most of the story surrounds the 13-year-old girl, Katia's sister, who has her optimistic and rosy outlook on life being shattered by the realities happening with her mom, a prostitute, and sister, who's heading down that same path. There's also a subplot with her meeting an evangelical Christian, who takes interest in her as a convert. Of course, this results in mixed messages and misunderstood feelings and awkwardness ensues. The ending was a bit unsatisfiying, but the young actress was good--you felt sad for her character and sympathized that she could be so much more.
