What to Know

Critics Consensus

More a collection of unsettling moments than an altogether cohesive story, Keeper is too half-baked to have much staying power despite a committed turn from Tatiana Maslany.

Keeper is a movie that starts with immense promise but squanders it minute by minute. Despite a great performance from Maslany, Keeper struggles to remain innovative and definitely doesn’t stick the landing. Go to Full Review

A surreal, endlessly creepy exploration of love and desire, with a terrific turn from Tatiana Maslany, makes for an exciting and unpredictable departure in Osgood Perkins’ oeuvre. Go to Full Review
Owen Gleiberman Variety Nov 14
The mood is low-key and naturalistic, yet a streak of trippy weirdness keeps intruding. And here’s the thing: The weird parts don’t add up. That’s likely by design, but that doesn’t make it good. Go to Full Review

This surreal horror tale finds director Osgood Perkins at the height of his powers, using space and rhythm for maximum creepy impact; unfortunately, the script can't sustain the mood all the way. Go to Full Review

The film’s biggest struggles stem from the writing and tone. Perkins and screenwriter Nick Lepard never quite balance tease and reveal, suggestion and explanation. Go to Full Review

«Keeper is the closest thing to a challenge, an experiment, the best proof that Perkins continues to squeeze the imaginations of terror like a ripe orange. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Dec 30 Went in with extremely low expectations so I guess I wasn’t disappointed. My taste may be different than others, but I thought The Monkey by Osgood Perkins was an absolutely horrible movie (my top 3 worst horror movie after Witchboard remake and Hurry Up Tomorrow). Was Keeper as bad as those movies? No, but it still was a bad movie. Was too slow and only the very ending was satisfying. I almost fell asleep in this movie, something that should never happen in a horror movie. Osgood Perkins better not go the route of M. Night Shyalaman, who started off strong but then becomes hit and miss, with lots of misses. See more Dec 11 What a slow burner this is. I enjoyed every part of it. It does keep you on the edge of your seat in a subtle but unnerving way. Strong acting performances, especially by the lead. The creatures in it are refreshing & pretty scary. See more Dec 2 It feels like a movie where people will make videos longer than the actual movie explaining all the symbolism, a completely boring watch that felt more like an abstract surrealist art film rather than a horror movie. I would have forgiven that if it didn’t commit the cardinal sin of thinking the audience were lobotomized halfway through the movie and felt the need to explain everything they saw in detail rather than let the audience figure out the film for themselves. Not much scare effects. See more Read all reviews
