Peter Sobczynski RogerEbert.com Badly written, ineptly staged, horribly acted, historically suspect and boring beyond belief ... Rated: 0.5/4 Jul 17, 2013 Full Review David DeWitt New York Times It's not worthless, but it's not good. As a genre film, it's too ambitious; as an art film, it's too obvious. Rated: 2/5 Jul 11, 2013 Full Review Andrew Schenker Slant Magazine Make no mistake, for all the deferred killing, this is still a bloody affair, one which takes a grotesque glee in arrows being shot through faces and impromptu torture sessions. Rated: 1/4 Jul 11, 2013 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The result is not only ineffective but becomes a dramatically inert, overly violent embarrassment for both De Niro and Travolta. Rated: 1/4 Sep 1, 2022 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Initially a contender for one of those so-bad-it's-good exercises, Killing Season creakily turns into another underdeveloped idea that doesn't have enough going for it to remain of interest. Aug 22, 2019 Full Review Eric Melin Scene-Stealers.com It wants to be a war-is-Hell 'coming home' story, but it ends up playing like a cheap action flick starring two men who are obviously too old to be running through the woods beating the living crap out of each other. Audience Member Only one good thing I can say about this movie is that it wasn't morally reprehensible. That's where we're starting. Go watch a clip of Travolta's Serbian accent from this and you'll get the only thing worth a laugh. This movie pretends to tell a story from two soldiers on opposing sides of a conflict finding common ground to appreciate life and family. And yet both exclaim that they already had an appreciation for nature and life too. And both play into the narrative that "war is just what they're used to" giving more thought to the problem of mental health in society, but we don't talk about that here. What happens here is two soldiers fight, pretend like they're moving on, and we believe about as much as Travolta's acting. So maybe it's just an action movie and you should "shut your brain off and enjoy it" - and that's just what this movie is; Brainless and thoughtless. It isn't so bad it's funny. It's just boring and forgettable. I'm only writing this review to practice interacting with RT because I'm so sure no human being will ever read this because I'm sure no human being will feel anything from this movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/04/24 Full Review Dani G One guy attacks and takes advantage, then talks too much, so the other recovers, surprises and attacks to take advantage, and then, guess what? Talks too much so the other recovers.... Back and forth. That's the movie Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/27/24 Full Review Thomas V Highly underrated film. I think we were spoiled with movies like this. Watching Killing Season in the current year takes on new significance and greater appreciation. It even references conflicts that are relevant today. Great movie night film with giants DeNiro and Cage acting in the same film. Cage pulls off a convincing but amusing Serbian/Russian accent. DeNiro plays the regretful American special ops vet who would rather drink away memories of horrors of war than spend time with his family. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/09/23 Full Review Jelisije J A good action film that is carried well with its two leads incredible chemistry with one another. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/02/23 Full Review Audience Member It dragged and lacked fleshed-out characters. The bloody back-and-forth was tense, weird, and non-sequitur. The two main character's struggle added interest to the film. I kept watching just to get what level of involvement they would present themselves with. What made the film worthy in the end was the impasse they came to. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm surprised at the amount of haters this movie has - though I can relate to some of them. This movie is "harsh" and you should get kids out of sight before playing it, but the story itself is so twisted and kept me put. Not a must, but definitely a great watch if you got a strong stomach.
