Based on incredible true events, Jérome Salle's gripping new espionage thriller depicts the remarkable story of a French public servant who unwittingly finds himself in conflict with one of the modern era's most powerful and dangerous forces: Russia's FSB. Gilles Lellouche stars as Mathieu, a gregarious and dedicated diplomat who accepts a posting to Irkutsk as the head of Siberia's Alliance Française. He hopes the change will be good for his family and struggling marriage, but before long Mathieu's staging of cultural events and support of artistic expression sees him fall afoul of local authorities. Accused of a terrible crime, he soon realizes someone has fabricated a case with Russia's Federal Security Service -- he has been framed. Arrested, imprisoned and isolated, Mathieu has nowhere to turn. Defending himself is impossible, the French authorities are helpless -- it seems he has no choice: to try and escape.

Critics Consensus

If Kompromat isn't the most consistent -- or consistently believable -- political thriller, deft direction and a tense, fast-paced story make it a generally gripping watch.

Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's about the people themselves, and I appreciated that about the film. Feb 11, 2023 Full Review Michael Nordine Variety The result is cold but competent, which, whether intentional or not, is ultimately apropos of the subject matter. Jan 27, 2023 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times A well-crafted chase picture that doubles as a fiery warning about the dangers of an authoritarian government that can create its own reality, with no accountability for mistakes or malevolence. Jan 27, 2023 Full Review Lee Zumpe Tampa Bay Newspapers Ultimately, “Kompromat” is a decent popcorn thriller for a lazy summer afternoon — though, its themes skew a bit darker than most films that fit this category. Aug 23, 2023 Full Review Erick Estrada Cinegarage A strange mix of tone and genre, Kompromat doesn't quite reach its full potential despite an interesting premise. [Full review in Spanish] Aug 17, 2023 Full Review Diego Conesa Otroscines.com Lack of conviction and screenplay and performance flaws in the most formal aspects of the story make Kompromat predictable, inconsequential, and unbelievable at all times. Avindu G A tale of fateful mysterious encounters. A promoter of culture a work horse is very well portrayed by Gilles. Something that's frequently remarkable about European cinema is quietness that builds up anxiousness. Kompromat got that distracting silence to which the thrills gets bombarded. A beautiful love story that's ill-fated yet pure and childish. Joanna Kulig was perfect in portraying the woman lost between worlds. Rest of the cast put up sincere performances too. Cinematography is excellent adapting to the mood of each moment. Kompromat is a simple story that's told right. Worth the time spent. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/11/23 Full Review Jon P Started out somewhat engrossing (if slow), but never really develops its themes past predictable cliches. By the time you reach the concluding scene's soaring, redemptive music, it all feels phony and the emotions unearned. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/30/23 Full Review D G O Excellent acting and realistic representation of russian life, as russian immigrant i find it compelling.
