Simon T You'd think a movie that includes volcanic explosions, tidal waves, diving bell and hot air balloon malfunctions would have some excitement. Bernard Kowalski's great achievement is to turn all these elements into sludge. It's aimless, boring, badly acted, and flatly photographed. The best thing is Frank De Vol's music, which does most of the heavy lifting but is probably more suited to a big screen musical. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/06/24 Full Review Audience Member For the age this was recorded. At the end of the 60's, historical and scientific knowledge was impressive. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member It stunk. Lame acting, lame story. Very dated. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member I saw the movie when it was originally released in 1969 at the theater. Yes, I'm that old. I would have been 14 that August. I can't honestly say I remember much about the script. I do remember that it had a rather stellar cast and that they all gave performances that didn't disappoint me. What I really remember was the volcano itself. I didn't know very much about volcanoes back then. I hadn't studied anything about volcanology as yet back then. And this movie made a profound impact on me of just how powerful a volcano can be and just how destructive and deadly. Volcanology was still a growing science back then, but the movie special effects wizards did an amazing job of showing what an explosion of that magnitude (it was heard 3000 miles away which still makes it the loudest sound ever recorded) would look like and the effects it had on surrounding islands and ships on the local seas. Looking back from what we know now, it missed a lot. But they couldn't portray what they didn't know yet. All in all, it made enough of an impression on me, as a 14 year old already interested in science, to add volcanoes to the list of things I wanted to learn about.
