What to Know

Critics Consensus

Krystal hinges -- and ultimately stumbles -- on character behavior that beggars belief, defies logic, and finally runs well beyond the average viewer's ability to care.

Dana Schwartz Entertainment Weekly Krystal feels like the result of an elaborate blunder wherein three different scripts were accidentally shuffled together and then - presumably through a series of hijinks - the director accidentally shot it all straight through. Rated: C+ Apr 13, 2018 Full Review April Wolfe TheWrap So baffling that it must be appreciated at least for its ability to defy all logic. Apr 13, 2018 Full Review Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times Too forced, chaotic and randomly eccentric to make for a fully engaging and cohesive emotional experience. Apr 12, 2018 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Little to nothing about "Krystal" works and its a shame considering the talent involved. Rated: 1/5 Feb 12, 2022 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review There are times when the movie feels like it's more eccentricities over substance, but overall it holds its own thanks to a strong cast, a subtle charm and sense of humor, and a spirited outlook on a type of living. Jun 10, 2020 Full Review Sean Mulvihill FanboyNation.com Krystal is a movie that is overflowing with bewildering decisions, from its bizarre tonal shifts to its complete disinterest in the moral implications of its characters' actions. Wolfgang G „Krystal" ist ein schöner komischer Liebes Film, mit einem herrlichen Schuss „schwarzen Humor". Ein sehenswerter Film mit sehr guten Schauspielern. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/17/22 Full Review Audience Member Wildly underrated. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time (Thank you William H. Macy). Gives you hope that film making isn't completely dead. The collection of characters and acting is awesome. Witty, charming, and intelligent (ha, probably why it got low scores?). Reminds me a little of the flavor of "The Girl Next Door." Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member I don't see why so many are ragging on this movie. Sure, it was nothing great, but it was fun and a little offbeat. Quite predictable but the characters were believable and story fun and upbeat. Not great but good for a night of entertainment Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Very refreshing! The dialogue was funny and at times charmingly Faulknerian. Characters were likable, warts and all. It was nice to see William H. Macy directing. The surreal animated bits were creative and stirring. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a completely misunderstood comedic movie that simply lampoons it's southern characters with witty charm. From Kathy Bates to Bill Macey and Rosario Dawson, you can see why the movie drew them to their parts in the movie. Enjoy this underrated gem. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/10/19 Full Review Audience Member I personally loved this movie. Based on the description, you may think it's meant to be serious, but it is a thoughtful comedy. "Krystal" is a movie with a story, not a plot, which means the characters drive the narrative not a series of events. Some may have thought it lacked direction because of this, but it's precisely this reason that makes the movie ring true (despite it's unlikely basis) and the reason that you can't guess the ending. The main character is an old soul. Because of his chronic heart condition, he's been sheltered his whole life. He admits that he has never known what love songs are talking about, but he believes he's in love. To overcome his heart condition, he creates an alternate persona that makes him feel brave enough to pursue this love. He approaches love from the perspective of a naive, chivalrous, romantic. From this lens, his actions m a k e s e n s e. His poetic musings aren't meant to be revelatory -- he's a naive, sheltered boy and the movie underscores this many times -- but they are meant to be thought-provoking to the extent that anyone's journey to understanding love and life is. This movie feels organic and fun. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
