Cameron M A film that starts is intriguing at first but overstays it's welcome and becomes too ridiculous. The story follows a town that, largely unemployed, starts to build a road that has been promised for years. The local mayor is against this and does everything to stop this but eventually joins the people in their mission. Other affairs of the town occur throughout the film; marriage affairs, weddings, blowing up a house to make way for the road. It's never made clear to the audience how long the road is and how near it is to completion. The marriage affair subplot becomes very tiring after a while as well. The cinematography is pretty good and the acting is alright as well. The whole concept of the town working on the road for nothing, only the promise of getting paid, is a bit silly and the hunger strike near the end of the film doesn't make sense as well. The film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 31st Academy Awards but lost to the much superior film; France's Mon Oncle. I can't comment whether it was better or worse than the other nominees that year as have yet to see them. Overall, an interesting story that becomes a bit ridiculous.
