Eva Ramos EscribiendoCine The mélange that the film presents is very similar to what we are used to seeing in other Spanish series and feature films, in which a collage of derivative work tries to make up for a lack of ideas... Reinhard W "La ABUELA" (Grandma) Why 5 Stars? Well, first... i am near 70 and... take great care when giving such high value to a cinematic work. THIS piece... deserves it. A truly deeply frightening "pearl of cinema" whose PLEASURE, as prepared... is unique. Like a 5-star menu... All the "ingredients" complement each other to form a whole, without "the chef" forcing ANYTHING. "La Abuela" is based on that well known theme of "GETTING OLD" and also …the desire & longing for "EVERLASTING YOUTH". It skilfully leads the audience gently down a path that reveals more psychological mysteries with every minute, and accompanies the main characters through excellent lighting, production-design and camera work...WITHOUT giving anything AWAY! A real "fingernail nibbler", for SURE! Although the story is "gender-neutral", I can VERY well imagine that girls & women of ALL ages can, er...WILL put themselves in the shoes of the main actress/actresses! I dare to say: Even Hitchcock + del Toro would applaud!" Without spoilers, it is hardly possible to reveal the "ingredients" of the "recipe" mentioned above, but... let's try to use keywords: "Rosemarie's Baby", "Midsommar", "Hereditary", "The Room" and "Jessabelle" are just a few movies that come to mind for (kinda) similarities. In short: Director Paco Plaza (REC) and his TEAM did everything right! Unfortunately, "La Abuela" (The Grandma) was also a victim of these fast-moving times, and (in Europe + certainly also the USA) of the lack of daring on the part of the publishers/promoters. People who have a soft spot for profound, slowly but steadily building psycho-horror with well-written roles... and ultimately everyone ELSE who is open to good stories WILL like this film. DEFINITELY even.... I DEEPLY recommend it to all that HAV'NT seen it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/28/24 Full Review Jorge M #52moviesin52weeks #2023 #114 #LaAbuela #Max ¿De que trata? ¿Me gustó? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
