But what I appreciated most was seeing the Second World War from a European perspective rather than through the usual American lens. It feels fresh, ambitious and truly epic. It didn't disappoint. Truly epic, with the space to tell both the incredible story of De Gaulle's resistance in exile and capture the dynamics of his personality and relationships, I heartily recommend this film, even to those with only passing interest in the subject matter. The telling of the story of De Gaulle's complex relatoinship with Churchill, and of the bravery of the battle of Bir Hakeim, are two particular standouts, as are the performances of Simon Abkarian as De Gaulle and Simon Russell Beale as Churchill.
